Ibn al-Khatīb is mainly known as a litterateur, but he was also an engaged politician who held the office of vizier in the Nasri kingdom of Grenada. His political ideas were related to his wish to justify his involvement in political affairs and, in particular, his position as a powerful vizier.

La religión y la violencia parecen ir unidas la una a la otra inevitablemente. La cuestión surge acerca de si la violencia es inherente al islam, y para contestarla, el artículo examina periodos sucesivos de la historia musulmana, desde este punto de vista. La investigación muestra que no existe una relación intrínseca y que el islam contemporáneo tiende mayoritariamente a separar la religión de la violencia.

Le traduzioni realizzate da Michele Scoto dei grandi commentari averroisti alle opere di Aristotele hanno contribuito non solo a una nuova comprensione di Aristotele ma anche alla creazione di una vera e propria corrente filosofica che lo stesso Averroè non avrebbe mai immaginato: l’averroismo latino. Parallelamente, Maimonide ha contribuito a sviluppare una corrente di pensiero simile nel contesto dell’ebraismo medievale, sostenendo un approccio razionalista alla fede basato sulle filosofie di Aristotele e Averroè. Il contributo segue le due linee di sviluppo (...) dell’averroismo medievale. Michael Scott translated Averroes’ long commentaries on Aristotle into Latin and herewith he contributed not only to a new understanding of Aristotle but also to the creation of a new philosophical movement that Averroes could never have imagined, Averroism. In a parallel way, it was Maimonides who helped to develop a similar movement within Medieval Judaism since he encouraged a rational approach to the faith based in the philosophy of Aristotle and Averroes. En su refutación de los filósofos, el teólogo Algacel ataca sus doctrinas sobre la causalidad divina, y destaca su crítica a la doctrina de Avicena basada en la distinción entre ser necesario por sí mismo, y posible por sí mismo pero necesario por causa de otro. Cuando Averroes refuta, a su vez, la obra de Algacel, a menudo señala que la doctrina que este atacaba era propia de Avicena, y no de Aristóteles, y se aparta del primero.In his refutation of (...) the philosophers, the Muslim theologian Al-Ghazzâlî argues for the incoherency of their doctrines on divine causality, and focuses his attacks on Avicenna’s doctrine of the distinction between being necessary by itself and being possible by itself, but necessary because of another. When Averroes refutes, on his turn, Al-Ghazzâlî’s work, he often points out that the doctrine refuted by al-Ghazzâlî belongs to Avicenna, not to Aristotle, and distances himself from the former. Three main trends of Islamic thought – rational theology, philosophy and Sufism – developed on the Iberian Peninsula during its Arab domination. All three have their origins in the Islamic East and incorporated Jewish thinkers who lived in al-Andalus. The relations among these main trends were often conflictive, but also positive in the case of thinkers who wanted to harmonize philosophy and Sufism (Avempace, Ibn Tufayl) or philosophy and rational theology (Averroes, Maimonides). In its reading of Aristotle's book On the Soul, Averroes was not only interested in the knowledge acquired by the intellect but also in the sensationary and post-sensationary stages of our cognitive process. The paper attempts at an interpretation of Averroes' Long Commentary On the Soul as an analysis of how man elaborates the different kinds of cognition, as well as it enquiries on the metaphysical foundations of Averroes'theory of knowledge.

Philosophy in Iran finds its own way after Avicenna’s death in 1037 and goes it until the late 17th century AD. The article looks at the period following his death and pays special attention to Naṣîr ad-Dîn aṭ-Ṭûsî, and Ibn al-Muqaffa̔ are influential in Ṭûsî’s thought.

Averroes fue filósofo, médico y jurista, pero en el mundo latino se le conocíó ante todo como Commentator, el comentador de Aristóteles. Pertenecen a esta actividad dos tipos de escritos: la exposición sistemática, taljis, y la exégesis literal, tafsir, los cuales son objeto de análisis aquí. Son las dos fases de un proyecto que le ocupa muchos años, y que busca comprender íntegramente a Aristóteles como personificación de la sabiduría.

El manuscrito árabe número 5.000 de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid contiene los epítomes o comentarios menores de Averroes a varias obras de Aristóteles. Unas anotaciones marginales al principio del epítome de la Física resultan ser fragmentos del comentario mayor de Averroes a la obra de Aristóteles. Estos fragmentos son el objeto principal del artículo puesto que son los únicos testimonios del original árabe. El artículo considera también anotaciones de los propietarios del códice en árabe y en caracteres árabes, en (...) árabe, en caracteres hebreos y alguna palabra hebrea, y en latín, a veces correcto, otras más bien romance; el latín puede aparecer en escritura gótica o en caracteres hebreos. Dal 1980 sappiamo che Hasan Hanafi (1935-2021) aveva un progetto di vita che ha descritto come un triangolo. Il lato più lungo del triangolo è costituito dai suoi studi sull’eredità islamica e, in particolare, sul _ʿIlm usūl al-fiqh, La scienza dei fondamenti della giurisprudenza_. Un altro lato è costruito dalla sua analisi e critica del patrimonio occidentale. Il terzo lato riguarda la vera “realtà”, e per H. Hanafi la realtà è il Corano. L’articolo esamina il suo libro dedicato a questo (...) tema: fu il suo ultimo libro. Since 1980 we knew that Hasan Hanafi (1935-2021) had a lifelong project that he described as a triangle. The longest side of the triangle is made by his studies on the Islamic heritage and, in particular, on the _ʿIlm usūl al-fiqh, The science of the fundamentals of source law_. Another side is built by his analysis and criticism of the Western Heritage. The third side concerns true “reality”, and for H. Hanafi reality is the Koran. 'Abd Allâh Ibn al-Muqaffa' (724-759) es conocido, sobre todo, por su traducción del pahlevi (persa medio) al árabe de la obra Calila y Dimna. Ibn al-Muqaffa' era de origen persa, estaba orgulloso del legado sasánida y era consciente de los valores racionales de la religión zoroastria en unos momentos en que la cultura árabe se limitaba al Corán y a la poesía. En este artículo se señalan unos valores racionales que aparecen en comentarios de Ibn al-Muqaffa' y que son fácilmente (...) identificables con el legado zoroastrio. (shrink)

Sohravardi, Shiháb ad-DínYa~yá Suhrawardi (1155-1191) desarrolló una filosofia basada en el principio simbólico de la luz, y expuesta en su obra Sabiduría de la iluminación, en particular, pero exigió estudiar la filosofia de raíz aviceniana para entenderla. En este trabajo se utilizan en particular dos obras de Sohravardi posteriores a la misma, Las estaciones de los sufles, que como e] título indica es intuitiva, y eJ Libro de los destellos, que es argumentativa y aviceniana, y que él a menudo acusa (...) de "peripatética" para poner de manifiesto cómo para él toda forma de filosofia es inseparable de la aplicación gnóstica. If anyone still raises doubts about the function of philology and the need for critical editions, this book should definitely put those doubts to rest. It shows that no history of philosophy is possible without intensive philological work with the original texts.

Because of the impact of Islam in the development of Arab culture, the first Arabic thinkers were theologians. Their main concern was not to prove God's existence or his creation of the world (both these facts being obvious in their view), but to solve questions related to human destiny. They argued about such questions as whether the Muslim who had committed a major sin had thereby lost his faith and deserted the community of believers, and about the exact status of (...) human freedom. This second question was particularly perplexing since, if a person is the author of his own acts and therefore responsible for them, God's power would be curtailed, but on the other hand, if the person is not responsible, his freedom of action is suppressed and God would be unjust in punishing him for his bad deeds. (I make no distinction here between the terms “God” and “Allah,” since for Muslim authors the God of Islam is also the God of Judaism and Christianity.). (shrink)

What makes political power legitimate? Without legitimation, subjects will not accept power, and, since religion permeated medieval society, religion became foundational to philosophical legitimations of political power. In 2013, the XIX Annual Colloquium of the International Society for the Study of Medieval Philosophy took place in Alcalá de Henares, one of the medieval centers of political debate within and between Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities. The members of these communities all shared the common belief that God constitutes the remote or (...) proximate cause of legitimation. Yet, beyond this common belief, they differed significantly in their points of departure and how their arguments evolved. For instance, the debate among Western Christians in the conflict between secular power and Papal authority sowed the seeds for a secular basis of legitimacy. The volume reflects the results of the colloquium. Many contributions focus on key Christian thinkers such as Marsilius of Padua, Thomas Aquinas, John Quidort of Paris, Giles of Rome, Dante, and William of Ockham; other studies focus on major authors from the Jewish and Muslim traditions, such as Maimonides and Alfarabi. Finally, several papers focus on lesser-known but no less important figures for the history of political thought: Manegold of Lautenbach, Ptolemy of Lucca, Guido Terrena, John of Viterbo, Pierre de Ceffons, John Wyclif and Pierre de Plaoul. The contributions rely on original texts, giving the readers a fresh insight into these issues. (shrink)

Afrontamos un tema tan particular como el propuesto desde una perspectiva historicista con la voluntad de insertar aquello que podríamos simplemente observar dentro de los textos en una corriente que iría más allá de la mera sincronía o el apunte estético. Pensamos, por lo tanto, que un acercamiento diacrónico a la obra puede poner de relieve un sentido más luminoso y completo. Sería, en este sentido, una corriente evidentemente más ancha y difusa que desembocaría en la posibilidad de crear una (...) obra cuyas características no afloran arbitrariamente, sino que constituyen el producto provisional de un proceso aún activo. Partimos de un hecho evidente: las ciudades han sufrido a lo largo de los últimos doscientos años un proceso de cambio sin precedentes. Sobre esa base, situaremos a Gil de Biedma, voz surgida en una ciudad –conviene recordarlo– cuya vocación europea es para bien y para mal única en España, en una cima virtual sobre cuyas faldas y en diferentes cotas iremos situando distintos textos, ideas diversas. Digo textos y no autores a sabiendas y refiriéndome siempre al estrecho territorio que respecta a la ciudad. (shrink)
