This article discusses Journey of the Universe as a project that consists of a film, book, conversation series, online classes, and a website. It describes how the creators worked to integrate science and humanities, not privilege or elevate science. It refutes arguments made in Lisa Sideris's Consecrating Science: Wonder, Knowledge, and the Natural World that suggest that Journey overlooks religion and distorts wonder. The article observes that Journey does not dismiss religion but includes it in explicit ways. It does not (...) dictate wonder; it evokes wonder. In short, Journey is a living or functional cosmology with implications for mutually enhancing human–Earth relations. (shrink)

Indeed, nearly one quarter of the world's population has been influenced by Confucianism in some way, especially in family structures and values. The challenge, as Tu Weiming suggests, is to ensure the continuance of tradition in modernity, thereby achieving an effective counterpoint to the destruction of both human communities and the Earth community.

With the challenge of communicating climate science in the United States and making progress in international negotiations on climate change there is a need for other approaches. The moral issues of ecological degradation and climate justice need to be integrated into social consciousness, political legislation, and climate treaties. Both science and religion can contribute to this integration with differentiated language but shared purpose. Recognizing the limits of both science and religion is critical to finding a way forward for addressing the (...) critical challenges of climate change. How we value nature and human–Earth relations is crucial to this. We need a broader environmental ethics in dialogue with the science of climate change. (shrink)

The environmental crisis is most frequently viewed through the lens of science, policy, law, and economics. In recent years the moral and spiritual dimensions of this crisis are becoming more visible. Indeed, the world religions are bringing their texts and traditions, along with their ethics and practices, into dialogue with environmental problems. Using the terms "cosmology" and "cultivation," the religious nature of Confucianism is explored, beginning with a discussion of the ambiguity surrounding Confucianism and its political uses, which often obscure its religious dimensions. It is also assumed that categories of Western theology such as immanence and transcendence are not adequate to describe Confucianism as religious. In this spirit, it is suggested that beyond political distortions or theoretical interpretations, Confucianism has religious dimensions that need to be explored further. The interaction of the (...) microcosm of the self with the macrocosm of the universe is a central dialectic for establishing inner and outer harmony. Thus, cultivating oneself, responding morally to the social and political order, and resonating with the patterns in nature are at the heart of Confucian religiosity. This is illustrated by two examplars of the Japanese Neo-Confucian tradition: Yamazaki Ansai (1618-1682) and Kaibara Ekken (1630-1714). (shrink)

Ekken thus aimed to articulate a creative and dynamic milieu for moral education, political harmony, social coherence, and agricultural sustainability. _The Record of Great Doubts_ embodies Ekken's profound commitment to Confucian ideas and practices as a method for establishing an integrative ethical vision, one he hoped would guide Japan through a new period of peace and stability. Early in his career Thomas Hunt Morgan was interested in embryology and dedicated his research to studying organisms that could regenerate. Widely regarded as a regeneration expert, Morgan was invited to deliver a series of lectures on the topic that he developed into a book, Regeneration. In addition to presenting experimental work that he had conducted and supervised, Morgan also synthesized and critiqued a great deal of work by his peers and predecessors. This essay probes into the history of regeneration (...) studies by looking in depth at Regeneration and evaluating Morgan’s contribution. Although famous for his work with fruit fly genetics, studying Regeneration illuminates Morgan’s earlier scientific approach which emphasized the importance of studying a diversity of organisms. Surveying a broad range of regenerative phenomena allowed Morgan to institute a standard scientific terminology that continues to inform regeneration studies today. Most importantly, Morgan argued that regeneration was a fundamental aspect of the growth process and therefore should be accounted for within developmental theory. Establishing important similarities between regeneration and development allowed Morgan to make the case that regeneration could act as a model of development. Buku ini dikarang untuk pembaca “awam” (seperti saya) oleh dua ilmuwan yang masing-masing sudah memiliki nama tersendiri karena banyak publikasi: Brian Thomas Swimme, seorang profesor kosmologi evolusioner di San Francisco, dan Mary Evelyn Tucker, seorang lektor dalam bidang studi lingkungan hidup di Yale, New Haven. Diilhami oleh mentor dan sahabat mereka, almarhum geolog dan teolog Thomas Berry, mereka bersama-sama menyusun suatu “kisah (epos) tentang munculnya alam semesta dan berkembangnya komunitas hidup, dengan menawarkan suatu visi baru tentang cara (...) kita dapat menumbuhkan semangat komunitas bumi.” (cover). Bab 1-4 mengisahkan kurang lebih sembilan milyar tahun perkembangan alam semesta, mulai dari Big Bang, eksplosi terang dan materi yang senantiasa meluas dan melalui suatu proses kreatif menggembleng materi yang kemudian akan menjadi miliaran galaksi. Dengan bahasa yang umumnya non-teknis, dan sangat indah, disertai dengan kepekaan terhadap tradisi-tradisi bangsa-bangsa manusia yang bermenung tentang alam raya, para pengarang berhasil menampilkan deretan kejadian yang dahsyat dan jauh itu menjadi suatu proses yang terasa menyangkut kita juga. Fokus mereka pada proses pembentukan bintang-bintang serta eksplosi-eksplosi bintang yang, baru sesudah 8-9 miliar tahun, memunculkan solar system kita, yakni matahari dengan planet-planet di sekitarnya, khususnya bumi kita yang mengalami suatu proses penyejukan dan pemadatan yang unik. Dalam proses jutaan tahun terbentuk atmosfir di sekitar bumi dan lautan-lautan yang menutupi sebagian besar permukaannya. Dengan energi yang berasal dari terang matahari dari jarak yang menguntungkan, dipersiapkan pentas untuk suatu tahap baru yang menakjubkan: munculnya hidup di bumi..................... Dalam bab 10-11 para pengarang mencari jalan keluar dari ketidak-seimbangan destruktif yang telah terjadi di bumi. Mereka mempermasalahkan pemikiran materialistis deterministis yang sejak Galileo, Newton, Descartes, dan lain-lainnya, menyerahkan materi yang dianggap mati begitu saja kepada kontrol manusia yang berakal budi. Apakah materi memang sepasif seperti dipikirkan filsafat itu? Kita sekarang dapat melihat dari miliaran tahun pembentukan alam semesta bagaimana di dalam materi pun ada dinamika mengatur diri (self organizing) dengan cara-cara yang tidak dapat diprediksi. Di tengah proses besar yang penuh kreativitas ini umat manusia ditantang mencari tempat dan perannya ke depan. Seperti bintang-bintang dan lautan-lautan telah memberi sumbangan tersendiri untuk jagat raya dan bumi, demikian juga miliaran manusia—sebagai garis depan evolusi sekarang—akan dapat membantu membuka jalan bagi sesuatu yang kini belum dapat diduga, asalkan manusia mau melepaskan genggaman kontrolnya atas yang lain dan dengan sikap kekaguman mau menjadi bagian dari komunitas bumi dan menyelaraskan diri dengan iramanya Ini cuma beberapa benang dari sebuah buku yang sangat kaya, inspiratif, dan mampu mengubah pandangan pembaca. Menurut hemat saya, buku ini juga secara mendalam bersifat religius, kendati tidak meminjam bahasa agama apapun. Although the emotional and motivational characteristics of dreaming have figured prominently in folk and psychoanalytic conceptions of dream production, emotions have rarely been systematically studied, and motivation, never. Because emotions during sleep lack the somatic components of waking emotions, and they change as the sleeper awakens, their properties are difficult to assess. Recent evidence of limbic system activation during REM sleep suggests a basis in brain architecture for the interaction of motivational and cognitive properties in dreaming. Motivational and emotional content (...) in REM and NREM laboratory mentation reports from 25 participants were compared. Motivational and emotional content was significantly greater in REM than NREM sleep, even after controlling for the greater word count of REM reports. (shrink)

Social networks play a significant role in learning and thus in farmers’ adoption of new agricultural technologies. This study examined the effects of social network factors on information acquisition and adoption of new seed varieties among groundnut farmers in Uganda and Kenya. The data were generated through face-to-face interviews from a random sample of 461 farmers, 232 in Uganda and 229 in Kenya. To assess these effects two alternative econometric models were used: a seemingly unrelated bivariate probit model and a (...) recursive bivariate probit model. The statistical evaluation of the SUBP shows that information acquisition and adoption decisions are interrelated while tests for the RBP do not support this latter model. Therefore, the analysis is based on the results obtained from the SUBP. These results reveal that social network factors, particularly weak ties with external support, partially influence information acquisition, but do not influence adoption. In Uganda, external support, gender, farm size, and geographic location have an impact on information acquisition. In Kenya, external support and geographic location also have an impact on information acquisition. With regard to adoption, gender, household size, and geographic location play the most important roles for Ugandan farmers, while in Kenya information from external sources, education, and farm size affect adoption choice. The study provides insight on the importance of external weak ties in groundnut farming, and a need to understand regional differences along gender lines while developing agricultural strategies. This study further illustrates the importance of farmer participation in applied technology research and the impact of social interactions among farmers and external agents. (shrink)

People enroll in medical research for many reasons ranging from decisions regarding their own or family members' health situation to broader considerations including access to health and financial resources. In socially vulnerable communities the choice to participate is often based on a risk-benefit assessment that goes beyond the medical aspects of the research, and considers the benefits received. In this qualitative study, we examined the motivations of Rwandan women to participate in a non-commercial collaborative research study examining the safety, acceptability, (...) and adherence of a contraceptive vaginal ring in Rwanda juxtaposed with the perceptions of the research within the community. 351 women attended the screening visit, four were excluded because they were not able to complete the assessment of understanding. The remaining participants' ages ranged from 17 to 38 and 80% had primary level of education or below. 120 were enrolled. Findings highlighted motivations for joining the study that were relayed both formally by the clinic and informally by the community including the positive aspects of the ring. There were also some negative rumors circulating regarding the research site, likely from excluded participants who faced potential stigma based on that exclusion. It was understood by most participants that they were enrolled in a research study and participants actively sought out enrollment in the research for a variety of reasons. The experiences demonstrate that although inequalities in access to health care may create conflicting situations around the study, it is possible to form partnerships between a research center and participants/their partners, for research about reproductive health. Il confronte notamment certaines propositions de Grimshaw (1990) avec des usages attestés repérés en corpus et suggère de nouvelles hypothèses descriptives. L’extraction des usages attestés est réalisée à l’aide du concordancier « Corpus Workbench » sur 3 années du quotidien régional L’Est Républicain telles que mises à disposition sur le site du centre de ressources du CNRTL.
