  1. Present and Future Instances of Virtual Rape in Light of Three Categories of Legal Philosophical Theories on Rape.Litska Strikwerda - 2015 - Philosophy and Technology 28 (4):491-510.
This paper is about the question of whether or not virtual rape should be considered a crime under current law. A virtual rape is the rape of an avatar in a virtual world. In the future, possibilities for virtual rape of a person him- or herself will arise in virtual reality environments involving a haptic device or robotics. As the title indicates, I will study both these present and future instances of virtual rape in light of three categories of legal (...)

Theft of virtual items in online multiplayer computer games: an ontological and moral analysis.Litska Strikwerda - 2012 - Ethics and Information Technology 14 (2):89-97.
In 2009 Dutch judges convicted several minors for theft of virtual items in the virtual worlds of online multiplayer computer games. From a legal point of view these convictions gave rise to the question whether virtual items should count as “objects” that can be “stolen” under criminal law. This legal question has both an ontological and a moral component. The question whether or not virtual items count as “objects” that can be “stolen” is an ontological question. The question whether or (...)

The value sensitive design of a preventive health check app.Jeroen van Grondelle, Cathelijn Timmers, Anke van Gorp, Marlies van Steenbergen & Litska Strikwerda - 2022 - Ethics and Information Technology 24 (3):1-12.
In projects concerning big data, ethical questions need to be answered during the design process. In this paper the Value Sensitive Design method is applied in the context of data-driven health services aimed at disease prevention. It shows how Value Sensitive Design, with the use of a moral dialogue and an ethical matrix, can support the identification and operationalization of moral values that are at stake in the design of such services. It also shows that using this method can support (...)

  6. Male Friendship and Intimacy.Robert A. Strikwerda & Larry May - 1992 - Hypatia 7 (3):110-125.
Our primary focus is the concept of intimacy, especially in the context of adult American male relationships. We begin with an examination of comradeship, a nonintimate form of friendship, then develop an account of the nature and value of intimacy in friendship. We follow this with discussions of obstacles to intimacy and of Aristotle's views. In the final section, we discuss the process of men attaining intimacy.

  9. Men in Groups: Collective Responsibility for Rape.Larry May & Robert Strikwerda - 1994 - Hypatia 9 (2):134 - 151.
We criticize the following views: only the rapist is responsible since only he committed the act; no one is responsible since rape is a biological response to stimuli; everyone is responsible since men and women contribute to the rape culture; and patriarchy is responsible but no person or group. We then argue that, in some societies, men are collectively responsible for rape since most benefit from rape and most are similar to the rapist.

The other side of the coin: Semantic dementia as a lesion model for understanding recollection and familiarity.Cherie Strikwerda-Brown & Muireann Irish - 2019 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 42.
The syndrome of semantic dementia represents the “other side of the coin” to Alzheimer's disease, offering convergent evidence to help refine Bastin et al.’s integrative memory model. By considering the integrative memory model through the lens of semantic dementia, we propose a number of important extensions to the framework, to help clarify the complex neurocognitive mechanisms underlying recollection and familiarity.

    Rape, Group Responsibility and Trust.Victoria Davion - 1995 - Hypatia 10 (2):153 - 156.
In this paper I link the very interesting analysis of responsibility provided by Larry May and Robert Strikwerda in "Men in Groups: Collective Responsibility for Rape (May and Strikwerda 1994) to some strategies for helping women avoid rape. In addition, I call for some clarification on May and Strikwerda's claim that rapists are fully responsible for their actions and that it is largely a matter of luck which men actually turn out to be rapists.
