Regimens of the Mind: Boyle, Locke, and the Early Modern Cultura Animi Tradition.Sorana Corneanu - 2011 - London: University of Chicago Press.
In _Regimens of the Mind_, Sorana Corneanu proposes a new approach to the epistemological and methodological doctrines of the leading experimental philosophers of seventeenth-century England, an approach that considers their often overlooked moral, psychological, and theological elements. Corneanu focuses on the views about the pursuit of knowledge in the writings of Robert Boyle and John Locke, as well as in those of several of their influences, including Francis Bacon and the early Royal Society virtuosi. She argues that (...)

    Introduction.Sorana Corneanu, Benjamin I. Goldberg & Diego Lucci - 2023 - Journal of Early Modern Studies 11 (1):9-16.
This essay explores the idea of experience and its epistemological and practical role in maintaining the health of a household among early modern English Royalists. A number of prominent royalists during the mid-seventeenth century British Civil Wars expended quite some effort in the collection of medical recipes, including Queen Henrietta Maria herself, as well as William and Margaret Cavendish, and the Talbot sisters—Elizabeth Grey and Alethea Howard. This essay looks at these Royalists and four of their collections: three published (Henrietta (...)

Logic and the Movement of Reasoning: Pierre Gassendi on the Three Acts of the Mind.Sorana Corneanu - 2021 - Perspectives on Science 29 (3):292-326.
The aim of this paper is to assess the central role the imagination acquires in Pierre Gassendi’s logic. I trace the structuring scheme of the three acts of the mind—common to a good number of late scholastic and early modern logics—to the Thomistic notion of the movement of reasoning in knowledge and argue that Gassendi revisits this notion in his logic. The three acts scheme is from the beginning a bridge between logic and the natural philosophical treatment of the soul. (...)

Francis Bacon on Motion and Power.Guido Giglioni, James A. T. Lancaster, Sorana Corneanu & Dana Jalobeanu (eds.) - 2016 - Cham: Springer International Publishing.
This book offers a comprehensive and unitary study of the philosophy of Francis Bacon, with special emphasis on the medical, ethical and political aspects of his thought. It presents an original interpretation focused on the material conditions of nature and human life. In particular, coverage in the book is organized around the unifying theme of Bacon’s notion of appetite, which is considered in its natural, ethical, medical and political meanings. The book redefines the notions of experience and experiment in Bacon’s (...)

Distribution on Contingency of Alignment of Two Literal Sequences Under Constrains.Sorana D. Bolboacă & Lorentz Jäntschi - 2014 - Acta Biotheoretica 63 (1):55-69.
The case of ungapped alignment of two literal sequences under constrains is considered. The analysis lead to general formulas for probability mass function and cumulative distribution function for the general case of using an alphabet with a chosen number of letters in the expression of the literal sequences. Formulas for three statistics including mean, mode, and standard deviation were obtained. Distributions are depicted for three important particular cases: alignment on binary sequences, alignment of trinomial series, and alignment of genetic sequences. (...)

Religiosity and Economic Behaviour. An Exploratory Analysis of the Hungary-Romania Cross-Border Area.Florica Stefanescu & Sorana Saveanu - 2013 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 12 (35):132-157.
Our paper is an exploratory analysis of the role religion can still have today with respect to directing students’ economic behaviour. We evaluated and grouped the theories dealing with the relationship between religion and economics in three categories: theories that consider the two areas as incompatible, theories that identify mutual determination between them and theories that admit the coexistence or the mutual support between economics and religion. We sought to clarify the degree of religiosity of students and its relationship with (...)

A simulation study for the distribution law of relative moments of evolution.Lorentz Jäntschi, Sorana D. Bolboacă & Radu E. Sestraş - 2012 - Complexity 17 (6):52-63.
Nine selection‐survival strategies were implemented in a genetic algorithm experiment, and differences in terms of evolution were assessed. The moments of evolution (expressed as generation numbers) were recorded in a contingency of three strategies (i.e., proportional, tournament, and deterministic) for two moments (i.e., selection for crossover and mutation and survival for replacement). The experiment was conducted for the first 20,000 generations in 46 independent runs. The relative moments of evolution (where evolution was defined as a significant increase in the determination (...)

A Bibliometric Mapping of the Research Trends of Public Governance and Entrepreneurship Framework.Oana Ramona Lobonţ, Raul Purcariţa, Sorana Vatavu & Florin Costea - 2021 - Postmodern Openings 12 (1Sup1):35-53.
The involvement of governments and public institutions in entrepreneurial activity has grown considerably in the last years. Public governance has begun to pay more attention to the fact that, in order to achieve the goal of economic development in a country, it is necessary to increase entrepreneurship both qualitatively and quantitatively. Most governments have created significant actions that encouraged and supported the entrepreneurial activity and also they have contributed to supporting the private sector in the economy. The present paper analyses (...)

Not for personal gratification, or for contention, or to look down on others, or for convenience, reputation, or power.Matthew Sharpe - 2015 - Journal of Early Modern Studies 4 (2):37-68.
This paper examines the apology for the life of the mind Francis Bacon gives in Book I of his 1605 text The Advancement of Learning. Like recent work on Bacon led by the ground-breaking studies of Corneanu, Harrison and Gaukroger, I argue that Bacon’s conception and defence of intellectual inquiry in this extraordinary text is framed by reference to the classical model, which had conceived and justified philosophising as a way of life or means to the care of the (...)
