Leading one's life as a person is an essential feature of our human existence which is constitutively characterized by finiteness, sociality and vulnerability. Within the framework of a pragmatistic anthropology central features of our being persons (i.e. personal identity, self-consciousness, freedom, autonomy and responsibility) are made explicit in this study. The such unfolded conception is anthropological in the sense of being restricted to the human life-form. The explication is pragmatistic in a double sense: Firstly, action is taken as a complex (...) and not reducible basic feature; secondly, the study is committed to the pragmatistic model of justification. Leading one's life as a human person, this is the study's central thesis, is realized in constellations of recognition (intersubjective or institutionally framed). These can be made explicit as basic grammar of our evaluative Praxis within an ascriptivist framework. (shrink)

Als Hegel 1831 stirbt entwickelt sich in den Kreisen seiner Anhänger eine komplexe Diskussion um das Verhältnis von Religion, Philosophie und Staat. Was zunächst als Debatte um die adäquate Deutung des Hegelschen Denkens beginnt, gestaltet sich im Vorlauf der Revolution von 1848 zu einer der radikalsten und fruchtbarsten Phasen der Geschichte des politischen Denkens. Unter dem Eindruck der repressiven Züge des Preußischen Staates und der zunehmenden Loslösung des Individuums aus sozialen Banden, versuchen sich Denker wie Bruno Bauer, Ludwig Feuerbach, Arnold (...) Ruge und Karl Marx nicht bloß an einer Neubestimmung unseres Verständnisses von Freiheit und sozialer Gemeinschaft, sondern demonstrieren durch ihre Schriften die politisch-praktische Bedeutung von Philosophie überhaupt. Zu diesen zentralen Zügen des Linkshegelianismus versammelt dieser Band zwölf neue Forschungsbeiträge in deutscher und in englischer Sprache. Der Klimawandel ist die globale Krise unserer Gegenwart. Mit Blick auf die sich hieraus ergebenen Handlungsoptionen und -zwänge stellt der verantwortliche Umgang mit Energie sicher einen der zentralen Bereiche dar. Unsere ethische Verantwortung betrifft dabei beides: Erzeugung und Verbrauch von Energie gleichermaßen. Der vorliegende Band verfolgt zwei Ziele: Erstens soll ein interdisziplinärer Dialog ermöglicht und die dafür notwendigen fachlichen Reflexionen angestoßen werden. Keine Einzeldisziplin kann auf die komplexen Probleme des Klimawandels oder die mit dem Terminus Energieverantwortung angezeigten Herausforderungen alleine eine (...) plausible Antwort geben. Vielmehr müssen die Wissenschaften ein gemeinsames Verständnis der Probleme entwickeln, um auch interdisziplinär geteilte Antworten bereitstellen zu können. Zweitens soll dies in transdisziplinärer Perspektive erfolgen. Michael Quante focuses on what Hegel has to say about such central concepts as action, person and will, and then brings these views to bear on contemporary debates in analytic philosophy. This book enables professional analytic philosophers and their students to understand the significance of Hegel's philosophy to contemporary theory of action. As such, it will contribute to the ever-increasing erosion of the barrier between the continental and analytic approaches to philosophy.

: Debates on precedent autonomy and some forms of paternalistic interventions, which are related to questions of personal identity, are analyzed. The discussion is based on the distinction between personal identity as persistence and as biographical identity. It first is shown that categorical objections to advance directives and "Ulysses contracts" are based on false assumptions about personal identity that conflate persistence and biographical identity. Therefore, advance directives and "Ulysses contracts" are ethically acceptable tools for prolonging one's autonomy. The notions of (...) personality and biographical identity are used to analyze the ethically relevant features. Thereby, it is shown that these concepts are operative in and useful for thinking in biomedical ethics. The overall conclusion is that categorical arguments against precedent autonomy or "Ulysses contracts" are based on misleading theories of personal identity and that advance directives are an ethically respectable tool for prolonging individuals' autonomy in cases of dementia and mental illness. After presenting the current version of principlism, in the process repudiating a widespread deductivist misinterpretation, a fundamental metaethical disagreement is developed by outlining the deductivistic critique of principlism. Once the grounds for this critique have been understood, the dispute between casuistry, deductivism and principlism can be restructured, and the model of "application" proven to be the central difference. In this paper the thesis that personal identity is essentially constituted by social relations is defended. To make this plausible the problem of personal identity is broken down into four interrelated sets of problems. Of these, the unity -- and the persistence -- problems cannot be resolved using the notion of a person and therefore personal identity in this sense is not socially constituted. But this paper argues that the conditions of personhood, and the structure of a human being's personality (...) -- which are the other two sets into which the problem of personal identity is dissolved -- are best understood as being constituted by social relations, especially relations of mutual. In this paper it is shown that in his conception of value, published in the first volume of Capital, Marx relies on Hegel’s concept of pure recognition to organise the relations between use- and exchange-value on the one hand and the relation between the social relations between things (goods) and actors (sellers) on the other hand. Establishing this thesis is important in three respects: Firstly it demonstrates that there is a strong continuity in the philosophical thought of Karl Marx, making (...) visible an essential relation between his Economic-philosophical Manuscripts and his later writings. Secondly it helps to better understand Marx’s conception of value; and thirdly it shows that “recognition” is an important conception in his critique of political economy. (shrink)

This book explores, in rich and rigorous ways, the possibilities and limitations of “thick” autonomy in light of contemporary debates in philosophy, ethics, and bioethics. Many standard ethical theories and practices, particularly in domains such as biomedical ethics, incorporate minimal, formal, procedural concepts of personal autonomy and autonomous decisions and actions. In this paper, conceptions of the failure of the human species in the philosophy of history that can be found in the thought of Marx, Benjamin, and Adorno will be presented. Before that, some aspects of Hegel’s metaphysics have to be recapitulated as background, even if Hegel’s conception of the philosophy of history cannot be inserted into the constellation spanned here. Der systematische Gehalt des Hegel'schen Handlungsbegriffs wird vor dem Hintergrund der gegenwartigen sprachanalytischen Handlungstheorie entfaltet und interpretiert. - Die ungebrochene Relevanz des Buches zeigt sich in aktuellen Ubersetzungen u.a. ins Italienische, Japanische, Spanische und Ungarische.

This book brings together the debate concerning personal identity and central topics in biomedical ethics. Based on a metaphysical account of personal identity in the sense of persistence and conditions for human beings, conceptions for beginning of life, and death are developed. Based on a biographical account of personality, normative questions concerning autonomy, euthanasia, living wills and medical paternalism are dealt with. By these means the book shows that “personal identity” has different meanings which have to be distinguished so that (...) human persistence and personality can be used to deal with central questions in biomedical ethics. Zusammenfassung. In der Auseinandersetzung um die Frage, ob aktive Sterbehilfe mit dem ärztlichen Ethos vereinbar ist, werden häufig deskriptive Unterscheidungen wie Tun vs. Unterlassen, aktiv vs. passiv oder auch intendieren vs. in Kauf nehmen benutzt, um eine kategorische moralische Differenz zwischen Töten und Sterbenlassen auszuweisen. Als zusätzliche Schwierigkeit erweist sich dabei zum einen, daß zentrale Begriffe zwischen einer deskriptiven und einer ethischen Bedeutung changieren, und zum anderen, daß die Kennzeichnung des Problems (z.B. Sterbehilfe) selbst ethisch nicht neutral ist. Nach der (...) Entwicklung einer ethisch neutralen Problemstellung werden kategorische Argumente gegen die ethische Zulässigkeit aktiver Sterbehilfe diskutiert und verworfen. Anschließend werden Begründungen diskutiert, die mittels intrinsischer oder extrinsischer Situationsmerkmale eine ethische Unzulässigkeit aktiver Sterbehilfe aufzuweisen versuchen. Dabei zeigt sich, daß graduelle ethische Unterschiede zwischen passiver, indirekt und direkt aktiver Sterbehilfe begründbar sind, die ein jeweils höheres Maß an Rechtfertigungsgründen erfordern. This article starts from two observations. The first is that some of the most prominent debates in social and political philosophy over the last few decades have been deeply obscured by the confusion of ontological/methodological and normative questions. And the second is that the renewed interest in Hegel's social philosophy has not yet yielded anything like a widely shared view as to whether it should be banned as a totalitarian or reappraised as a liberal account. The aim of this article (...) is first to specify systematically the ontological/methodological and normative dimensions of social philosophy by giving precise definitions of core concepts and paramount positions. Secondly, it is argued that Hegel's social philosophy can be characterized as combining what is called vertical holism with liberal communitarianism. This, thirdly, sheds new light both on the nature of fundamental questions in social philosophy and on the systematic relevance of Hegel's social philosophy. (shrink)

What does it mean to be a person? And in what way is this connected to our finitude, i.e. to the properly human aspect of our existence? By analyzing some of the core features of our form of life (personal identity, self-consciousness, freedom, autonomy, responsibility), Michael Quante answers these questions arguing that it is possible to be a person and lead an authentically human life only within social relationships of recognition: only in these relationships, it is possible to (...) know oneself and act autonomously and responsibly. Through a close examination of the philosophies of Fichte and Hegel, on the one hand, and of the most recent debates on analytical ethics, on the other, Quante thus lays the foundations for a pragmatistic anthropology, that is, for a conception focused on the active nature of human existence. Artykuł stawia pytanie o dopuszczalność handlu organami do przeszczepu: chodzi zatem o propozycję, która choć może robić wrażenie etycznie niedopuszczalnej, jest pomimo to coraz częściej wysuwana jako temat dyskusji w społeczeństwach zachodnich. Podstawowym powodem jest oczywiście rozbieżność między liczbą dawców i biorców. Artykuł odnosi się do różnych możliwych sposobów rozwiązania tego problemu, uznając przy tym, że pomysł komercjalizacji przeszczepów jest szczególnie prosty technicznie. Scharakteryzowane zostały trzy rodzaje argumentów etycznych w ogóle. Pierwszy z nich jest argumentem kategorycznym: podstawowe pojęcie, które określa (...) ten rodzaj argumentu, to pojęcie obowiązku moralnego. Drugi rodzaj argumentu można określić jako immanentny; w tym przypadku bierze się pod uwagę tylko cechy własne osób znajdujących się w takiej sytuacji, w której konieczne jest podjęcie pewnej decyzji o charakterze etycznym, oraz charakterystyka samej tej sytuacji i najbardziej bezpośrednie konsekwencje proponowanego działania. Pozostaje jeszcze argument zewnętrzny, gdzie pod uwagę bierze się tylko szerszy kontekst pewnej sytuacji. Teza artykułu głosi, że tylko dwa ostatnie rodzaje argumentów mogą mieć zastosowanie w przypadku debaty o komercjalizacji przeszczepów organów. Udowadnia się, że nie może mieć zastosowania argument odwołujący się do pojęcia obowiązku moralnego, możliwe jest jedynie rozumowanie odwołujące się do wewnętrznych lub zewnętrznych uwarunkowań, w jakich podejmuje się decyzje w dyskutowanej sprawie. Ostatnia część artykułu zawiera wyliczenie najważniejszych argumentów typu drugiego i trzeciego, które są wysuwane przez przeciwników komercjalizacji handlu organami. (shrink)
