Decisions in the environmental and in particular the climate domain are burdened with uncertainty. Here, we focus on uncertainties faced by individuals when making decisions about environmental behavior, and we use the statistical sampling framework to develop a classification of different sources of uncertainty they encounter. We then map these sources to different public policy strategies aiming to help individuals cope with uncertainty when making environmental decisions.

Individual differences in demographics, personality, and other related beliefs are associated with coronavirus disease 2019 threat beliefs. However, the relative contributions of these different types of individual differences to COVID-19 threat beliefs are not known. In this study, a total of 1,700 participants in Croatia completed a survey that included questions about COVID-19 risks, questions about related beliefs including vaccination beliefs, trust in the health system, trust in scientists, and trust in the political system, the HEXACO 60 personality inventory, as (...) well as demographic questions about gender, age, chronic diseases, and region. We used hierarchical regression analyses to examine the proportion of variance explained by demographics, personality, and other related beliefs. All three types of individual differences explained a part of the variance of COVID-19 threat beliefs, with related beliefs explaining the largest part. Personality facets explained a slightly larger amount of variance than personality factors. These results have implications for communication about COVID-19. (shrink)

Cognitive science has been traditionally organized around the individual as the basic unit of cognition. Despite developments in areas such as communication, human–machine interaction, group behavior, and community organization, the individual-centric approach heavily dominates both cognitive research and its application. A promising direction for cognitive science is the study of augmented intelligence, or the way social and technological systems interact with and extend individual cognition. We comment on the limits of relying on prior literature when constructing the design space for an integrative experiment; the adaptive nature of social and behavioral phenomena and the implications for the use of theory and modeling when constructing the design space; and on the challenges of measuring random errors and lab-related biases in measurement without replication.

This study presents a web-based sentence comprehension test aimed at identifying high school students who are at risk for a language delay. By assessing linguistic skills on a sample of high school students with Italian as an L2 and their monolingual peers, attending a vocational school, we were able to identify a subgroup of L2 students with consistent difficulties in sentence comprehension, though their reading skills were within the average range. The same subgroup revealed to experience a lack of support (...) within the school context, suggesting that poor L2 skills might be a critical variable to consider in order to identify students at risk for school exclusion. Regarding the test, accuracy to the on-line sentence comprehension task was significantly predicted by reading abilities and vocabulary skills, thus indicating that this test might represent a rapid but efficient way to assess linguistic abilities at school. We recommend that establishing a valid and practical procedure for the evaluation of linguistic skills in bilingual students who struggle with their L2 is the first step towards promoting social inclusion in the multilingual classroom, in order to increase their ability to actively participate in school and social activities. Doing phenomenological research entails a complex process that is only minimally published in scientific journals. What is often missing reflects how being in research calls into question the researchers themselves. Anyone who has conducted qualitative empirical research knows that personal engagement does not come at no cost; there are multiple pedagogical and professional practice gains. This article’s aim is to share the phenomenology behind phenomenology: the reflection and personal experience of doing/being in phenomenological research and the personal narrative of what (...) this experience has meant concerning the authors' own context: health care and nursing. Taking advantage of a conducted research exploring the lived experience of family caregivers of hematological patients assisted at home, we propose considerations about the perceived epistemic and cognitive gains, the formative and personal/professional sequels of having been reflective participants of phenomenologically oriented research. This paper presents a computational model of the way humans inductively identify and aggregate concepts from the low-level stimuli they are exposed to. Based on the idea that humans tend to select the simplest structures, it implements a dynamic hierarchical chunking mechanism in which the decision whether to create a new chunk is based on an information-theoretic criterion, the Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle. We present theoretical justifications for this approach together with results of an experiment in which participants, exposed (...) to meaningless symbols, have been implicitly encouraged to create high-level concepts by grouping them. Results show that the designed model, called hereafter MDLChunker, makes precise quantitative predictions both on the kind of chunks created by the participants and also on the moment at which these creations occur. They suggest that the simplicity principle used to design MDLChunker is particularly efficient to model chunking mechanisms. The main interest of this model over existing ones is that it does not require any adjustable parameter. (shrink)

Rapid Automatized Naming is considered a universal marker of developmental dyslexia and could also be helpful to identify a reading deficit in minority-language children, in which it may be hard to disentangle whether the reading difficulties are due to a learning disorder or a lower proficiency in the language of instruction. We tested reading and rapid naming skills in monolingual Good Readers, monolingual Poor Readers, and MLC, by using our new version of RAN, the RAN-Shapes, in 127 primary school students. (...) In line with previous research, MLC showed, on average, lower reading performances as compared to mGR. However, the two groups performed similarly to the RAN-Shapes task. On the contrary, the mPR group underperformed both in the reading and the RAN tasks. Our findings suggest that reading difficulties and RAN performance can be dissociated in MLC; consequently, the performance at the RAN-Shapes may contribute to the identification of children at risk of a reading disorder without introducing any linguistic bias, when testing MLC. ORCA.IT, a new online test of online research and comprehension was developed for the Italian population. A group of 183 students attending various types of upper secondary schools in Northern Italy were tested with the new tool and underwent further cognitive and neuropsychological assessment. The different school types involved in the study are representative of the school population in the Italian system, but can also be easily compared with the educational systems of other countries. The new test turned out to (...) have good psychometric properties after accurate item construction and final selection. In particular, Version 1 showed better characteristics than Version 2. Subsequently, comparison with one-way ANOVAs were performed to test whether differences exist between different school types, between groups with and without reading difficulties, and between males and females. Such differences are sometimes reported in the literature, but many remain controversial. Further, Pearson’s bivariate correlations were calculated to analyze associations between scores on the ORCA.IT and cognitive/neuropsychological variables. Finally, a stepwise regression analysis was performed on aggregated scores to identify the predictors of performance on each of the two versions, The test, especially in the most complete version (Version 1), appears to accurately and reliably capture students’ web searching abilities and online reading comprehension. The tool could highlight differences in online search and comprehension ability between students with and without reading difficulties, not penalizing overall performance but allowing very specific weaknesses to be pointed out. Further, it seems to be able to capture differences due to both educational pathways (different school types) and social attitudes (differences between males and females). Most interesting, it shows to be clearly resting on specific cognitive and neuropsychological abilities, including language, memory and attentional skills, which explain a large portion of the total variance. Offline text reading comprehension is a crucial predictor of online reading performance, while decoding ability is not. Prior knowledge also influences the results, as expected. The new tool turns out to be rather independent from previous internet experience and to measure more cognitively grounded processes related to information gathering, processing and communicating. We study experimentally a coordination game with N heterogeneous individuals under different information treatments. We explore the effects of information on the emergence of Pareto-efficient outcomes, by means of a gradual decrease of the information content provided to the players in successive experiments. We observe that successful coordination is possible with private information alone, although not on a Pareto-optimal equilibrium. Reinforcement-based learning models reproduce the qualitative trends of the experimental results.

Der heilige Lazaros vom Berge Galesion gehört unbestreitbar zu den wichtigsten Vertretern des Mönchtums in der mittelbyzantinischen Zeit. Wohl um 966/67 in einfachen Verhältnissen unweit von Magnesia am Mäander geboren und als Leon getauft, hatte er das Privileg, schon in jungen Jahren in einigen Klöstern seiner heimatlichen Umgebung, in Oroboi, Kalathai und in Strobelion, eine Ausbildung erhalten zu können. Die Sehnsucht, mit eigenen Augen die Terra Sancta zu schauen, führte ihn dann im Alter von etwa 18 Jahren zunächst nach Attaleia, (...) wo er geraume Zeit verweilte und unter dem Namen Lazaros in die Reihen der Mönche aufgenommen wurde, bevor er sich seinen großen Wunsch erfüllte und nach Jerusalem weiterzog. Er verbrachte einige Jahre in den bedeutenden Klöstern H. Sabbas und H. Euthymios, bevor er sich durch die Zerstörung des Heiligen Grabes im September 1009 durch den Kalifen al-Hakim veranlaßt sah, nach Kleinasien zurückzukehren. Nach einer Zeit der Wanderschaft durch Kilikien, Kappadokien und Pontos traf er, wahrscheinlich 1010 oder 1011, wieder in der heimatlichen Provinz Asia ein, wo er sich alsbald am Berge Galesion niederließ, um hier für gute vierzig Jahre als Asket und Stylit auf wechselnden Säulen zu leben. Als Lazaros dann am 7. November des Jahres 1053 verstarb, stand er bei seinen Zeitgenossen in höchstem Ansehen, war er doch zu einer „lebenden Ikone“ geworden: aufgrund seiner Frömmigkeit und Spiritualität, aber nicht zuletzt auch dank seiner weisen Ansprachen und Ratschläge kamen die Gläubigen in großer Zahl, ihn zu sehen und zu hören; sie machten den Galesion dergestalt zu einem eigenen Pilgerzentrum, das zeitweilig sogar zum unweit gelegenen Ephesos in Konkurrenz treten konnte. Inaugurado el 4 de diciembre de 1995, el Museo y Archivo Histórico Policial de la provincia del Chubut se encuentra en Rawson, la ciudad capital, y contiene numerosos documentos sobre diferentes momentos de la historia policial de la provincia. En este artículo nos proponemos presentar el libro de notas de la Administración de la Comisaría del Chubut correspondiente a los años 1880-1886. Consideramos que constituye una de las fuentes representativas de los primeros años de la colonia galesa de Chubut, debido (...) a que nos permite estudiar las primeras relaciones y conflictos que se dieron entre los colonos y las autoridades nacionales asignadas al territorio, vinculándolos con el debate parlamentario de 1863 en el que se discutió el proyecto para establecer la colonia en Patagonia. Haremos una breve referencia a los temas que se registraron en ese libro, para analizar luego un enfrentamiento entre el comisario Juan Finoquetto y uno de los líderes galeses, Lewis Jones. (shrink)
