"Disenchantment" is a key term in the self-understanding of modernity. But what exactly do we mean when we use this concept? What was its original meaning when Max Weber introduced it? And can the conventional meaning or Max Weber's view really be defended, given the present state of knowledge about the history of religion? This book is an attempt to divest this concept of its enduring enchantment. The first chapters of the book deal with the three empirical disciplines history, psychology (...) and sociology of religion to develop an understanding of religion that then lays the groundwork for what is presented in chapter 4, namely the most thorough study of Weber's views on disenchantment that has ever been undertaken. It turns out that Weber's use was highly ambiguous and that his grand narrative leading from the prophets of ancient Judaism to the crisis of meaning on the eve of the First World War collapses when we recognize this ambiguity. This makes it possible to construct an alternative that takes into account the dynamics of ever new sacralizations, their normative evaluation in the light of the values of a universalist morality and the dangers of the misuse of religion in connection with the formation of power. Émile Durkheim remains one of the most controversial, and deeply misunderstood, classics of social theory. His work differs from the dominant version of sociology that has essentially accepted the modernist self-description of contemporary societies; and it contradicts the individualism that has come to dominate the social sciences. Hans Joas is one of the foremost social theorists in Germany today. Based on Joas’s celebrated study of George Herbert Mead, this work reevaluates the contribution of American pragmatism and European philosophical anthropology to theories of action in the social sciences. This paper addresses the question of the relationship between creativity and autonomy - originally related to each other in the concept of the `self' as one of the crucial parts of the Meadian and symbolic interactionist heritage - and asks how we should construe this relation today. After a brief reconstruction of the history of the notions of `self' and `identity' the paper takes up the postmodern challenge of these notions by clarifying and partially revising them. It discusses the three (...) aspects of a possibly over-socialized conception of the person, the irreducibility of difference between socialized individuals and the role of power and exclusion in processes of identity formation. Jürgen Habermas’ philosophical oeuvre so far contained only few references to thinkers prior to Kant. The publication of a comprehensive history of Western philosophy by this author, therefore, came as a surprise. The book is not, as many had anticipated, a book about religion, but about the gradual emancipation of “secular” “autonomous” rationality from religion, although in a way that preserves a normative commitment to Christianity. While welcoming this attitude and praising the achievements of this book, this text is also (...) critical with regard to Habermas' understanding of faith and hints at several shortcomings of the historical argument resulting from this deficient presupposition. Ce livre développe une idée centrale : aux deux modèles dominants de l'action rationnelle et de l'action à visée normative, il est possible d'en ajouter un troisième, qui insiste sur le caractère créatif de l'agir humain. Ce troisième (...) modèle doit avoir une position englobante par rapport aux deux premiers. Il s'agit de mettre au jour dans tout agir humain une dimension créative qui n'est pas suffisamment prise en compte dans les modèles théoriques de l'action rationnelle et de l'action à visée normative. Cette approche, en effet, n'oppose pas aux actes créatifs les actes non créatifs, mais cherche à préciser les conditions d'application des deux modèles courants, en mettant en évidence la dimension créatrice qui s'y trouve implicitement contenue. Les différentes parties de l'ouvrage (étude de l'histoire des idées, reconstruction théorique des concepts, leur application concrète) servent toutes un but commun : montrer qu'il est pertinent et nécessaire de prendre en considération le caractère créateur de l'agir humain. This article explores the similarities between American pragmatism and historicism in the nineteenth century - similarities that were often ignored because of cultural differences between the U. S. and Germany and a different status of the natural sciences or the humanities in the two cultures. The main claim of this text is that American pragmatism developed ideas that allow us to overcome the dichotomy between objectivism and relativism in historiography. Joas identifies conceptual tools in the works of Josiah Royce, (...) Mead, and Dewey that can account both for the intersubjective and the temporal nature of human experience and the processes of the formation of ideals. By bringing Ernst Troeltsch, the most sophisticated thinker from the historicist tradition, into the picture, Joas demonstrates that in the 1920s one could almost speak of the beginning of a process of convergence between Mead’s “temporalized pragmatism” and Troeltsch’s “existential historicism.” For contingent reasons this convergence never took place, but remains a challenge to which this paper responds. In the middle of the 1960s, Talcott Parsons — undoubtedly the world's most important sociologist in the first decades after the Second World War and at that time at the peak of his influence and reputation — took part in a debate about the relationship between theology and sociology. His contribution, later published in a volume called America and the Future of Theology, was a fervent plea for the significance of sociology in front of a theological audience. But not everybody (...) in this audience seems to have accepted his arguments. The theological commentator at the debate, Oliver Read Whitley, made it abundantly clear in his response that the wedding of the two disciplines which Parsons had suggested should not take place immediately. Its announcement should at least be postponed until certain matters of vital importance for the marriage would have been cleared up. He emphasized that if we assume that one of the crucial conditions of a happy marriage lies in the equal chances of the partners to talk to each other, then the marriage Parsons had proposed would probably not be successful. The dialogue between the partners could, under Parsons's conditions, only be “a conversation in which the social sciences speak and theology listens, afterwards hastening to adapt its views to what the social sciences have stated”. Theology thus would be a mostly `passive' or `dependent' partner and not a `fully participating equal colleague'.John Milbank's writings, particularly his brilliant book Theology and Social Theory, does not offer us the perspective of a happy marriage either. Frustrated and even outraged by a world in which if not sociology, then certainly the sciences or at least `secular reason' have the say, he does not put much effort into an attempt to carefully delineate the possibilities and the limits of communication and cooperation between theology and the social sciences. Instead, he turns the tables and declares theology to be the master discourse of the future. He repudiates the claims of sociology to present an adequate view of reality and thus to define a place even for the sacred, and tries to get beyond what he calls the `false humility' of theologians today. The social sciences, according to Milbank, are bound to a project of secular reason — without being able to self-reflectively understand what the historical conditions for the constitution of this seemingly self-evident notion and sphere of the `secular' were. “Once, there was no `secular'” is the forceful opening sentence of his book. Not only sociology, but also liberal political philosophy, political economy, Hegelian and Marxist philosophy of history, and postmodern philosophy and cultural studies — they all become the object of Milbank's mostly devastating critiques; they all seem to suffer from the same birth defect and to be doomed to perish in view of the revitalized theology or the revitalized Catholic thinking which Milbank so powerfully propagates and which he intends to develop into the `ultimate' social science. Il dit son intérêt pour le texte de Gonzalez, (...) tout en soulignant que ce dont fait état Gonzalez n’est pas, pour lui, une question centrale. Il précise en même temps que son domaine de travail est la sociologie historique – ou une historiographie des religions informée par la sociologie –, qui est aussi, comme telle, une recherche empirique, et revient sur la comparaison Royce et Durkheim pour marquer quelques inflexions à ce qu’écrit Gonzalez. Joas se penche ensuite sur la contribution de Gisel, soulignant la part de malentendus, mais, aussi, la part de différence réelles, tout en réaffirmant son objectif : mettre en avant une histoire de l’universalisme moral. Joas s’arrête encore sur le texte de Scholl, regrettant que l’auteure traite d’une seule traite le « désenchantement » et la « sécularisation » qui sont, chez lui, deux champs de phénomènes nettement distingués. Quant à la thèse de Scholl – la sécularisation a aussi été mise en œuvre par des acteurs du religieux –, Joas l’approuve d’autant plus qu’il l’a défendue ailleurs. The point of departure of this review essay on Charles Taylor′s “A Secular Age” is that Taylor adds a new meaning to the already numerous meanings of the concept of “secularization”. His main interest is in the rise of what he calls “the secular option” and in the repercussions the availability of this option has for believers and non-believers. While his monumental study offers an immensely rich and rewarding material for the understanding of these processes, two major weaknesses are identified (...) here. 1. By taking medieval Christianity – and not a completely pre-axial civilization – as the prototype of an “enchanted” world, Taylor is in danger of interpreting the constant efforts at reform as a linear vector leading to modernity. This does not do justice to the contingency of these processes. 2. Taylor seems to overestimate the quantitative dimension of what he calls the post-Durkheimian forms of religious life, but his understanding of the true nature of the Church as a quintessentially network society is very important. In general, in some parts Taylor′s masterful history of ideas has to be extended into a more sociologically oriented explanation of secularization processes. (shrink)
