    Science and Aesthetic Judgment: A Study in Taine's Critical Method.Arnold Isenberg - 1953 - Journal of Philosophy 50 (20):621-622.
First published in 1953. This title provides an exposition and discussion on Hippolyte Taine, the leader of the Naturalist movement in French criticism. The book examines his theories and some of his practice, as a critic of literature and art. A more general consideration of the chief issues raised by his central problem is also given, namely the attempt to approach the analysis and judgement of works of art historically, and thus to provide an objective basis of criticism. The Authority of Experience: Sensationist Theory in the French Enlightenment.John C. O'Neal - 1996 - Pennsylvania State University Press.
Sensationism, a philosophy that gained momentum in the French Enlightenment as a response to Lockean empiricism, was acclaimed by Hippolyte Taine as "the doctrine of the most lucid, methodical, and French minds to have honored France." The first major general study in English of eighteenth-century French sensationism, _The Authority of Experience_ presents the history of a complex set of ideas and explores their important ramifications for literature, education, and moral theory. The study begins by presenting the main ideas (...)

Individual as Plurality: From Cytology to Nietzschean Philosophy in the Years 1880.Irene Audisio - 2014 - Scientiae Studia 12 (3):413-437.

    Saussure and His Intellectual Environment.Pieter A. M. Seuren - 2016 - History of European Ideas 42 (6):819-847.
SUMMARYThe present study paints the intellectual environment in which Ferdinand de Saussure developed his ideas about language and linguistics during the fin de siècle. It sketches his dissatisfaction with that environment to the extent that it touched on linguistics, and shows the new course he was trying to steer on the basis of ideas that seemed to open new and exciting perspectives, even though they were still vaguely defined. As Saussure himself was extremely reticent about his sources and intellectual pedigree, (...)

Editor's Introduction: Writing "Race" and the Difference It Makes. Gates - 1985 - Critical Inquiry 12 (1):1-20.
What importance does “race” have as a meaningful category in the study of literature and the shaping of critical theory? If we attempt to answer this question by examining the history of Western literature and its criticism, our initial response would probably be “nothing” or, at the very least, “nothing explicitly.” Indeed, until the past decade or so, even the most subtle and sensitive literary critics would most likely have argued that, except for aberrant moments in the history of criticism, (...)

The Tain of the Mirror: Derrida and the Philosophy of Reflection.Rodolphe Gasché - 1986 - Harvard University Press.
Deconstruction is no game of mirrors, revealing the text as a play of surface against surface. Its more radical philosophical effort is to get behind the mirror and question the very nature of reflection. The Tain of the Mirror explores that gritty surface without which no reflection would be possible.

The Tain: From the Irish Epic Tain Bo Cuailnge.Thomas Kinsella - 2002 - Oxford University Press UK.
The Táin Bó Cuailnge, centre-piece of the eighth-century Ulster cycle of heroic tales, is Ireland's greatest epic. It tells the story of a great cattle-raid, the invasion of Ulster by the armies of Medb and Ailill, queen and king of Connacht, and their allies, seeking to carry off the great Brown Bull of Cuailnge. The hero of the tale is Cuchulainn, the Hound of Ulster, who resists the invaders single-handed while Ulster's warriors lie sick. Thomas Kinsella presents a complete and (...)

The Tain of the Mirror: Derrida and the Philosophy of Reflection.Christopher Fynsk - 1987 - Review of Metaphysics 41 (1):137-139.
Gasché proposes to bring forth in Derrida's writings a philosophical dimension that has gone largely unrecognized by "deconstructionist" literary criticism and by a philosophical community that has for the most part been able to see in his text only a scandalous refusal of the traditional techniques of philosophical argumentation. He attempts to demonstrate the systematic character of Derrida's thought and its general scope, and to do so he gives particular attention to the earlier and more properly philosophical writings. This is (...)

Le Naturalisme Esthétique de Taine: Entre Positivisme Et Idéalisme.Pascale Seys - 2001 - Dialogue 40 (2):311-342.
ABSTRACT: Taine aspired to place his philosophical project in the synthesis of the two major theoretical tendencies of the nineteenth century: positivism, on the one hand, giving preference to the English tradition, and German metaphysics, mostly Hegelianism, on the other. What does this attempt mean in the field of aesthetics? Taine based his interpretation of the production of art on a series of objective laws, following the naturalist method, as he clearly stated at the École des Beaux-Arts de (...)

Doing Philosophy in the Contemporary World.Burcu Gurkan & Taine Duncan - 2015 - Philosophy in the Contemporary World 22 (2):28-34.
As a recent addition to the editorial board for the journal of Philosophy in the Contemporary World, I wanted to revisit a practice from past editions of the journal—interviewing philosophers who engage philosophical practice that reflects the mission of PCW. In this interview, a model for what I hope will continue to be a regular feature, I have a dialogue with the philosopher Burcu Gurkan. Professor Gurkan currently lives and works in Turkey while I live in work in the central (...)

Socio-Economic Determinants of Keeping Goats and Sheep by Rural People in Southern Benin.Luc Hippolyte Dossa, Barbara Rischkowsky, Regina Birner & Clemens Wollny - 2008 - Agriculture and Human Values 25 (4):581-592.
An understanding of factors influencing the decision of rural people to keep sheep and/or goats is crucial when formulating technologies and policies that support village-based small ruminant production. The knowledge of such factors will also improve assessment of impact intervention strategies on the livelihoods of rural people. Structured questionnaires administered in 228 households were used to study the ownership patterns of small ruminants in southern Benin. The ownership of goats was higher (91%) than sheep (35%) because goats are not affected (...)

Ambiguous Life Expectancy and the Demand for Annuities.Hippolyte D’Albis & Emmanuel Thibault - 2018 - Theory and Decision 85 (3-4):303-319.
In this paper, ambiguity aversion to uncertain survival probabilities is introduced in a static life-cycle model with a bequest motive to study the optimal demand for annuities. Provided that annuities’ return is sufficiently large, and notably when it is fair, positive annuitization is known to be the optimal strategy of ambiguity neutral individuals. Conversely, we show that the demand for annuities decreases with ambiguity aversion and that there exists a finite degree of aversion above which the demand is non-positive: the (...)

This essay considers the beginnings of the journal October's critical practice and the significance of a work by Michel Foucault: “Ceci n'est pas une pipe”.1 The theoretical issues/problematics raised by this essay became key to future debates in and around October; the essay becoming something of an emblematic means by which October might be distinguishing from other visual art critical practices. The importance of Foucault's text in relation to October was revealed during correspondences with Rosalind Krauss in August 2001. Foucault's (...)
