The causal axioms of algebraic quantum field theory: A diagnostic.Francisco Calderón - 2024 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A 104 (C):98-108.
Algebraic quantum field theory (AQFT) puts forward three ``causal axioms'' that aim to characterize the theory as one that implements relativistic causation: the spectrum condition, microcausality, and primitive causality. In this paper, I aim to show, in a minimally technical way, that none of them fully explains the notion of causation appropriate for AQFT because they only capture some of the desiderata for relativistic causation I state or because it is often unclear how each axiom implements its respective desideratum. After (...)

Trying to recapture the sense of human condition, Marcel and Levinas propose two ways which are apparently similar but different in ground. Marcel interprets intersubjectivity as a getting together that transcends the objectifying representation, while remaining at the ontological domain, as a co-esse. Levinas proposes an intersubjectivity that lies outside the limits of being, replacing the ontology with an ethics that acts as the new source of sense.

Inducing Novel Sound–Taste Correspondences via an Associative Learning Task.Francisco Barbosa Escobar & Qian Janice Wang - 2024 - Cognitive Science 48 (3):e13421.
The interest in crossmodal correspondences, including those involving sounds and involving tastes, has experienced rapid growth in recent years. However, the mechanisms underlying these correspondences are not well understood. In the present study (N = 302), we used an associative learning paradigm, based on previous literature using simple sounds with no consensual taste associations (i.e., square and triangle wave sounds at 200 Hz) and taste words (i.e., sweet and bitter), to test the influence of two potential mechanisms in establishing sound–taste (...)

Although there are those who understand that the debates about the morality of the interruption of pregnancy are newly born, when analyzing some passages of the classical sources, the antiquity of such discussions is revealed. Likewise, as the legal, political and moral conclusions in such respects are often based on a metaphysical, anthropological, theological or biological position, it is necessary to enter these fields in order to fully explore the different edges of such a complicated object. In this way, this (...)

Adaptation to online teaching of field practices in coastal engineering courses.José Ignacio Pagán Conesa - 2022 - Human Review. International Humanities Review / Revista Internacional de Humanidades 11 (5):1-11.
Field practices are ideal for the acquisition of specific competencies and for students to get a first-hand experience of the real environment of their profession. The COVID19 pandemic stopped them, forcing a move to online teaching. This research aims to define a new teaching approach to adapt them to the online environment, ensuring that the competencies are acquired in the same way as traditionally. It was decided to use various available audio-visual materials (documentaries, video reports, interactive web resources) from different (...)

According to Levinas, the philosophy of being is essentially violent because being is identified with its own negation. The Hegelian Absolute Subject is the perfect expression of the philosophy of Identity and represents the greatest violence. Levinas develops a philosophy of asymmetric inter-subjectivity as a space where difference is possible, offering an alternative to the modern subject.

    Urimpression husserliana y diacronía levinasiana: ¿continuidad o ruptura?

The realm of continued emergence.Jorge Conesa Sevilla - 2005 - Sign Systems Studies 33 (1):27-50.
This examination of the often-inaccessible work and semiotics of George Herbert Mead focuses first on his pivotal ideas of Sociality, Consciousness, and Communication. Mead’s insight of sociality as forced relatedness, or forced semiosis, appearing early in evolution, or appearing in simple systems, guarantees him a foundational place among biosemioticians. These ideas are Mead’s exemplar description of multiple referentiality afforded to social organisms (connected to his idea of the generalized other), thus enabling passing from one umwelt to another, with relative ease. Metaphysical disputations.Francisco Suarez - 2021 - Washington, D.C.: The Catholic University of America. Edited by Francisco Suárez & Shane Duarte.
Francisco Suárez (1548-1617) was one of the most important philosophers and theologians of Early Modern Scholasticism. Although Suárez spent most of his academic career as a professor of theology, he is better known today for his Metaphysical Disputations (Salamanca, 1597). The present volume contains a facing-page English translation of Metaphysical Disputations III & IV. Metaphysical Disputation III offers a general treatment of the properties of being as such, while Metaphysical Disputation IV deals with one of these properties in particular, (...)
