Fr. Roberto Busa was an Italian Jesuit. In this article his biography will briefly be presented, and some issues raised by his philosophy analyzed. Busa was known as a pioneer of computerized research in the humanities. With the support of IBM he constructed the Index Thomisticus, containing all the works of St. Thomas Aquinas. He believed that expressions of the human can be mathematically modeled. He was the originator of a specific conception of hypertext, in which logically structured programs are (...) able to challenge the general linguistic mode of thinking, in order to make better communication and understanding possible. However, Busa was also con- scious of the general ethical problems involved (Babel), and he hoped that the basic logic of objects could progress towards the truth of being. (shrink)

The Center of Interdisciplinary Studies in Cracow has a very rich tradition that has been studied by many and recently by Kamil Trombik. The very difficult period for the Church and for philosophy during the materialistic Marxist ideology was an opportunity for card. K. Wojtyła to outline a new mode of dialog between science and religion. The future Center, organized by Michał Heller and Józef Życiński not only captured this idea but transformed it into an academic institution centered on the (...) idea of philosophy in science, which was also developed at the Vatican Observatory by W.G. To model such complex domains a computer science specialist acts like a philosopher: makes classifications, explanations, etc. On the other hand there have to be some philosophical presuppositions - a conviction that a logical analysis and design will work in the domain being modeled: a postulate is introduced that logos is able to capture-in the reality. Praca Georga Schuppenera stanowi owoc bogatych studiów rzadko badanego zagadnienia, jakim jest jezuicka matematyka, jej historyczne uwarunkowanie i rozwój. Jezuitów powszechnie uważa się bowiem za uprawiających raczej studia teologiczne lub humanistyczne. Niejednokrotnie próbowano także zdeprecjonować wpływ zakonu na powstanie nowoczesnego, naukowego szkolnictwa. Trudno było polemizować z tego typu stereotypami bez oparcia się na źródłach archiwalnych, których niedostępność sprawiała, ze nie można było kusić się choćby na rzeczową apologetykę, nie mówiąc już o poważniejszym Studium. „Mrówcza" praca Georga Schuppenera dyskredytuje nazbyt uproszczone (...) i tendencyjne stereotypy o jezuickich studiach przedmiotów matematycznych. Studia te, bezpośrednio związane z nowym, pokopernikowym obrazem świata, ukazujący pośrednio także filozoficzne rozterki i rozstrzygnięcia jezuitów w tym trudnym okresie dziejów. (shrink)

Co łączy Arystotelesa z logicznymi bramkami współczesnych komputerów? Tego można się dowiedzieć z podręcznika Bremera - obszernego i filozoficznie ugruntowanego wprowadzenia do logiki. Dzisiaj, po wielu sukcesach wyemancypowanej z filozofii logiki formalnej, jeszcze tylko nieliczni nie uważają jej za dyscypliny naukową. Wielu jednak szuka na różne sposoby filozoficznych interpretacji tej ścisłej dziedziny wiedzy. Dlatego logikę można uprawiać albo banalnie, albo z filozoficzną zadumą, np. na tle historycznych ścieżek jej rozwoju. Nie jest to jednak proste. Opatrzona Przedmową Jana Woleńskiego książka Bremera (...) ma programowo to zadanie spełniać. Goethemu długie sznurowadła butów hiszpańskich kojarzyły się ze sznurowaniem umysłu w logikę. Z pewnością wielkiemu poecie trudno było uchwycić arystotelesowskie podejście do logiki, tak różne od współczesnego, w pełni sformalizowanego, ale jakże prostego jej ujęcia. Bremer obiera dla swych uczniów drogę historii, narażając ich może na podobne stresy, jakie towarzyszyły Goethemu. Po krótkim przeglądzie różnych etapów rozwoju logiki następuje krótkie omówienie relacji łączących logikę tradycyjną z logiką współczesną. Dla filozofa jest to bardzo ciekawe zagadnienie, stad może pewien niedosyt przy czytaniu tego podrozdziału. (shrink)

One can speak about mathematics too simplistically. On the one hand, school programs are such examples. On the other hand, the function of mathematics in elementary physics very much indicates the profound philosophical significance of mathematics: the author claims that mathematical language is a kind of command language, i.e. it is not just a description, but a control which has a specific power to manage the reality. This language has its proper hierarchy and structures which humans only are just starting (...) to understand and to use in basic ways, not without errors. Therefore some ethics regarding human mathematical thinking are needed: the affirmation of life. (shrink)

Filozofia elektryczności i magnetyzmu ma bardzo bogatą historię. Trudne do wytłumaczenia zjawiska elektryczne i magnetyczne nie poddawały się łatwo ujęciom racjonalny, tym naiwniej mówiono o nich na sposób fantastyczny, mityczny. W artykule omawiana jest pobieżnie historia opisu tych zjawisk, która doprowadziła do sformułowania pierwszych problemów filozoficznych. Dzisiejsza fizyka matematyczna dokonała unifikacji tych oddziaływań nie na podstawie zmysłowych intuicji „pierwotnych”, ale na podstawie matematycznego modelu. Zatem formy matematyczne i matematyczne struktury nie tylko stanowią właściwą bazę opisu naukowego, ale także wskazują na (...) filozoficzną podstawę naszej rzeczywistości. (shrink)

To create an astronomical software, one should use the most effective method to produce the quickest hardware calculation. However, the not so effective object oriented paradigm seems to have bigger influence on the astronomical domain. We discuss the status quo of its methodology. The traditional, Turing computation model does not have so distinct influence on knowledge creation because it is hardware-oriented. An object oriented programming language is more influential on discovery, because it works directly in the scientific domain.

Filozofię można nazwać „matką” naukowych teorii: czysto empirycznych i czysto matematycznych. Historia elektryczności i magnetyzmu ukazuje ważne jednoczenie się obu podejść. Unifikacja dokonująca się w nauce pozwala oczyszczać filozofię z mitycznych naleciałości, zaś nauce daje realistyczne odniesienie do świata, bez którego groziłby jej pusty formalizm. Omawiane tu problemy ukazują, że formy matematyczne są właściwą bazą dla nauki i przez to wskazują na filozoficzną, racjonalnie precyzyjną podstawę naszej rzeczywistości.

Church's Thesis (CT) was first published by Alonzo Church in 1935. CT is a proposition that identifies two notions: an intuitive notion of an effectively computable function defined in natural numbers with the notion of a recursive function. Despite the many efforts of prominent scientists, Church's Thesis has never been disproven. There exists a vast literature concerning the thesis. The aim of this book is to provide a one volume summary of the state of research on Church's Thesis. We introduce stellar photometry, its purpose and relationship to other astronomical quantities, presenting it within the context of astronomical research at the Vatican Observatory. We demonstrate the usefulness of the Vilnius Photometric System previously shown at Vilnius Astronomical Obs., Edinburgh Royal Obs., and Università di Roma “La Sapienza”, and then adopted by the Vatican Observatory for use with its Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope on Mount Graham, AZ, USA. The development of astronomical observations has led from photographic plates, through photoelectric detectors (...) to the use of sensitive CCD cameras. Expanding the photoelectric databank of “Vilnius Stars”, we describe the development of new techniques of data-acquisition, calibration to photometric standards, stellar classification and interstellar-matter characterization. Looking ahead, we briefly describe the extensive data set, and our plans for further detailed analyses. (shrink)

The aim of the paper is twofold. First, we want to recapture the genesis of the logics of order. The origin of this notion is traced back to the work of Jerzy Kotas, Roman Suszko, Richard Routley and Robert K. Meyer. A further development of the theory of logics of order is presented in the papers of Jacek K. Kabziński. Quite contemporarily, this notion gained in significance in the papers of Carles Noguera and Petr Cintula. Logics of order are (...) named there _logics of weak implications_. They play a crucial role in their monograph (Noguera and Cintula _Logic and Implication. An Introduction to the General Algebraic Study of Non-Classical Logics_, Trends in Logic 57, Springer, Berlin, 2021). But, more importantly, the other goal is to define some subclasses of the logics of order in reference to later results of Jacek K. Kabziński and Michael Dunn. The original conception of implication is due to Kabziński. Implication is a stronger notion than the notion of the connective of order aka weak implication. As a result, the three subclasses of logics of order are isolated: logics of implication, logics of symmetry, and tonoidal logics. These notions are uniformly defined and investigated from various viewpoints in terms of consequence operations. The emphasis is put on their semantics. (shrink)

I propose to elucidate and enlarge upon Professor Janusz Kuczyński’s writings on universalism via modifying the word “humanism” by adding the prefix “post” to enlarge the concept of humanism to include all present and future sentient and non-sentient life and by emphasizing the ethical thread that is the guidepost for dialogue in general and intercultural dialogue in particular. If one is to conduct a genuine dialogue, no relevant points of view should be excluded and so universalism is a necessary (...) condition for genuine dialogue that seeks the truth, and not the better of the other in argument. Indeed, this affords us a clue to Kuczyński’s subtitle of his work, Dialogue and Universalism as a New Way of Thinking. If one thinks of thinking as a search for truth, then genuine dialogue or in sensu stricto, polylogue is, to augment Kuczyński’s notion of dialogue, the only way of thinking. Debate or eristic is not thinking. It is not a search for truth. It is an attempt to defeat the other in argument. If one is to discover the truth, then that truth must be universal. (shrink)

In this paper, I endeavor to penetrate to the heart of Janusz Kuczyński’s writings about his concept of universalism and to offer my own deliberations upon it based upon my previous writings concerning universalism and dialogue and on my considerations of necessary conditions for the possibility of universal dialogue taking place. To this end, I posit ten conditions for the possibility of entering into genuine universal dialogue. For clarification of Kuczyński’s concept of universalism, I analyze his concept into meta-universalism (...) and holistic universalism. I also discuss the important role of complementarity in the selection of the content of both types of universalism. Finally, I discuss how the phenomenological epoché can be employed to choose the basic values that constitute the shared values of universalism. In so doing, I make reference to Chinese philosophy to illustrate the universality of ethical values. (shrink)

The Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy in Cracow has existed since 1934, when it was erected by the Congregation for Seminaries and Universities. For the first 55 years it educated only the Jesuits, but since 1989 it has been opened to the laity as well. A memorial book Philosophia Rationis Magistra Vitae was published to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Faculty of Philosophy with special dedication to its Professors: Fr. Roman Darowski SJ, Fr. Piotr Lenartowicz SJ, and Fr. Stanislaw Ziemiański (...) SJ. All of them have worked at the former Faculty of Philosophy which is now the Faculty of Philosophy of Ignatianum. In these past few years, Fr. Ziemiański and Fr. Lenartowicz have celebrated their 70th birthday, during this year Fr. Darowski will celebrate such jubilee. The book consists of two volumes. The first contains congratulatory letters from Provincials of the Polish Jesuits to the Jubilarians. It also contains a short history of the Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy in Cracow, and provides presentations of the professors celebrating their anniversaries. (shrink)

The initial segment of the latest volume of the _Ignatian Philosophical Yearbook _is centered on the discourse surrounding the presence of cultural heritage in the cyber domain. It explores the dissemination of this heritage by cultural institutions such as museums, libraries, and archives, as well as initiatives undertaken by Internet users. The authors scrutinize a comprehensive array of topics concerning the digital presentation of cultural artifacts, employing carefully selected examples in their discourse.

The abstract structure of inquiry - the process of acquiring and changing beliefs about the world - is the focus of this book which takes the position that the "pragmatic" rather than the "linguistic" approach better solves the philosophical problems about the nature of mental representation, and better accounts for the phenomena of thought and speech.
