Practical Research on the Application of Sponge City Reconstruction in Pocket Parks Based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process.Kun Ding & Yuan Zhang - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-10.
The rainwater system is an important part of the urban infrastructure as well as a key hub for maintaining the dynamic operation of the city and a clear indicator of the level of urban development. With the rapid development of urbanization, the hardened area of roads and residential areas has increased, and the construction of rainwater systems is so far insufficient, causing the urban waterlogging and water pollution problems to become increasingly serious. Accordingly, combined with the “sponge city” construction concept (...)

Perceived Overqualification and Intensive Smartphone Use: A Moderated Mediation Model.Xiongliang Peng, Kun Yu, Kairui Zhang, Hanbing Xue & Jianfeng Peng - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Previous studies only considered the impact of personal or environmental factors on intensive smartphone use separately, while largely ignoring the impact of person-environment fit on it. Drawing on the P-E fit theory, we proposed that perceived overqualification, an indicator of person-job misfit, positively affects intensive smartphone use via job boredom, and affective commitment moderates this indirect effect. We examined our hypotheses using four-wave time-lag data of 450 workers from 62 teams. The results revealed that POQ raised job boredom of an (...)

On the identifiability and estimation of functional causal models in the presence of outcome-dependent selection.Kun Zhang, Jiji Zhang, Biwei Huang, Bernhard Schölkopf & Clark Glymour - unknown
We study the identifiability and estimation of functional causal models under selection bias, with a focus on the situation where the selection depends solely on the effect variable, which is known as outcome-dependent selection. We address two questions of identifiability: the identifiability of the causal direction between two variables in the presence of selection bias, and, given the causal direction, the identifiability of the model with outcome-dependent selection. Regarding the first, we show that in the framework of post-nonlinear causal models, (...)

Collaborative Learning Quality Classification Through Physiological Synchrony Recorded by Wearable Biosensors.Yang Liu, Tingting Wang, Kun Wang & Yu Zhang - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Interpersonal physiological synchrony has been consistently found during collaborative tasks. However, few studies have applied synchrony to predict collaborative learning quality in real classroom. To explore the relationship between interpersonal physiological synchrony and collaborative learning activities, this study collected electrodermal activity and heart rate during naturalistic class sessions and compared the physiological synchrony between independent task and group discussion task. The students were recruited from a renowned university in China. Since each student learn differently and not everyone prefers collaborative learning, (...)

An Adaptive Parallel Method for Indexing Transportation Moving Objects.Kun-lun Chen, Chuan-wen Li, Guang Lu, Jia-Quan Li & Tong Zhang - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-11.
Transportation cyber-physical systems are constrained by spatiality and real-time because of their high level of heterogeneity. Therefore, applications like traffic control generally manage moving objects in a single-machine multithreaded manner, whereas suffering from frequent locking operations. To address this problem and improve the throughput of moving object databases, we propose a GPU-accelerated indexing method, based on a grid data structure, combined with quad-trees. We count object movements and decide whether a particular node should be split or be merged on the (...)

Internet Use, Social Networks, and Loneliness Among the Older Population in China.Dan Tang, Yongai Jin, Kun Zhang & Dahua Wang - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
While the rate of Internet use among the older population in China is rapidly increasing, the outcomes associated with Internet use remain largely unexplored. Currently, there are contradictory findings indicating that Internet use is sometimes positively and sometimes negatively associated with older adults’ subjective well-being. Therefore, we examined the associations between different types of Internet use, social networks, and loneliness among Chinese older adults using data from the Chinese Longitudinal Ageing Society Survey. Internet use was classified as interpersonal communication and (...)

The Positive Impact of Having Served as a Danwei Leader on Post-retirement Life Satisfaction: Experiences in China.Li He, Kun Wang, Tianyang Li, Jiangyin Wang, Yuting Wang, Zixian Zhang, Yuanyang Wu, Shuo Zhang, Siqing Zhang & Hualei Yang - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Relevance deprivation syndrome refers to feelings of incompetence among retired people caused by them leaving their high status or influential jobs. The question then arises: do people in positions of power, like Danwei leaders in China, have a lower life satisfaction post-retirement compared to other groups? This study investigated the influence of serving as a Danwei leader before retirement on retirees’ life satisfaction, as well as differences in this influence and the channels through which they are affected. Based on the (...)

Exploiting Spatial and Temporal for Point of Interest Recommendation.Jinpeng Chen, Wen Zhang, Pei Zhang, Pinguang Ying, Kun Niu & Ming Zou - 2018 - Complexity 2018:1-16.
An increasing number of users have been attracted by location-based social networks in recent years. Meanwhile, user-generated content in online LBSNs like spatial, temporal, and social information provides an ever-increasing chance to study the human behavior movement from their spatiotemporal mobility patterns and spawns a large number of location-based applications. For instance, one of such applications is to produce personalized point of interest recommendations that users are interested in. Different from traditional recommendation methods, the recommendations in LBSNs come with two (...)

On estimation of functional causal models : general results and application to the post-nonlinear causal model.Kun Zhang, Zhikun Wang, Jiji Zhang & Bernhard Scholkopf - unknown
Compared to constraint-based causal discovery, causal discovery based on functional causal models is able to identify the whole causal model under appropriate assumptions [Shimizu et al. 2006; Hoyer et al. 2009; Zhang and Hyvärinen 2009b]. Functional causal models represent the effect as a function of the direct causes together with an independent noise term. Examples include the linear non-Gaussian acyclic model, nonlinear additive noise model, and post-nonlinear model. Currently, there are two ways to estimate the parameters in the models: (...)

A New Minimality Condition for Boolean Accounts of Causal Regularities.Jiji Zhang & Kun Zhang - forthcoming - Erkenntnis:1-20.
The account of causal regularities in the influential INUS theory of causation has been refined in the recent developments of the regularity approach to causation and of the Boolean methods for inference of deterministic causal structures. A key element in the refinement is to strengthen the minimality or non-redundancy condition in the original INUS account. In this paper, we argue that the Boolean framework warrants a further strengthening of the minimality condition. We motivate our stronger condition by showing, first, that (...)

Causal discovery from nonstationary/heterogeneous data : skeleton estimation and orientation determination.Kun Zhang, Biwei Huang, Jiji Zhang, Clark Glymour & Bernhard Schölkopf - unknown
It is commonplace to encounter nonstationary or heterogeneous data, of which the underlying generating process changes over time or across data sets. Such a distribution shift feature presents both challenges and opportunities for causal discovery. In this paper we develop a principled framework for causal discovery from such data, called Constraint-based causal Discovery from Nonstationary/heterogeneous Data, which addresses two important questions. First, we propose an enhanced constraint-based procedure to detect variables whose local mechanisms change and recover the skeleton of the (...)

Likelihood and Consilience: On Forster’s Counterexamples to the Likelihood Theory of Evidence.Jiji Zhang & Kun Zhang - 2015 - Philosophy of Science 82 (5):930-940.
Forster presented some interesting examples having to do with distinguishing the direction of causal influence between two variables, which he argued are counterexamples to the likelihood theory of evidence. In this paper, we refute Forster's arguments by carefully examining one of the alleged counterexamples. We argue that the example is not convincing as it relies on dubious intuitions that likelihoodists have forcefully criticized. More importantly, we show that contrary to Forster's contention, the consilience-based methodology he favored is accountable within the (...)

The Evaluation of Discovery: Models, Simulation and Search through “Big Data”.Kun Zhang, Joseph D. Ramsey & Clark Glymour - 2019 - Open Philosophy 2 (1):39-48.
A central theme in western philosophy was to find formal methods that can reliably discover empirical relationships and their explanations from data assembled from experience. As a philosophical project, that ambition was abandoned in the 20th century and generally dismissed as impossible. It was replaced in philosophy by neo-Kantian efforts at reconstruction and justification, and in professional statistics by the more limited ambition to estimate a small number of parameters in pre-specified hypotheses. The influx of “big data” from climate science, (...)

I would like to congratulate James Woodward for another landmark accomplishment, after publishing his Making things happen: A theory of causal explanation. Making things happen gives an elegant interventionist theory for understanding explanation and causation. The new contribution relies on that theory and further makes a big step towards empirical inference of causal relations from non-experimental data. In this paper, I will focus on some of the emerging computational methods for finding causal relations from non-experimental data and attempt to complement (...)

Unmixing for Causal Inference: Thoughts on McCaffrey and Danks.Kun Zhang & Madelyn R. K. Glymour - 2018 - British Journal for the Philosophy of Science 71 (4):1319-1330.
McCaffrey and Danks have posed the challenge of discovering causal relations in data drawn from a mixture of distributions as an impossibility result in functional magnetic resonance. We give an algorithm that addresses this problem for the distributions commonly assumed in fMRI studies and find that in testing, it can accurately separate data from mixed distributions. As with other obstacles to automated search, the problem of mixed distributions is not an impossible one, but rather a challenge. 1Introduction2Background3Addressing the Problem4Discussion.

An Optimal DoS Attack Strategy Disturbing the Distributed Economic Dispatch of Microgrid.Yihe Wang, Mingli Zhang, Kun Song, Tie Li & Na Zhang - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-16.
As a promising method with excellent characteristics in terms of resilience and dependability, distributed methods are gradually used in the field of energy management of microgrid. However, these methods have more stringent requirements on the working conditions, which will make the system more sensitive to communication failures and cyberattacks. As a result, it is both theoretical merits and practical values to investigate the malicious effect of cyber attacks on microgrid. This paper studies the distributed economic dispatch problem under denial-of-service attacks (...)

This survey asked students to respond to four scenarios with potentially unethical business behavior and a string of questions related to the importance of ethics in business strategy and in personal behaviors. Using a matched sample of Chinese publicly listed firms, we find that CSR initiators have higher market valuations than matched CSR non-initiators, and CSR initiators controlled by the central and local governments have lower market valuations than CSR non-initiators and CSR initiators controlled by private shareholders. Additional analyses demonstrate that CSR initiators with high CSR reporting (...)
