Que partageons nous en commun? Beaucoup de choses, à l'évidence, tant la cohabitation des hommes n'a jamais semblé aussi étroite: l'eau, l'espace, la ville, certes, mais plus profondément le désir de voir notre société s'épanouir, au bénéfice de tous, comme la promesse d'un plaisir, d'une chance... Pourtant notre idéal se révolte : dégradation des civilités, lieux publics maltraités, équilibres sociaux ou politiques saccagés... Le vivre-ensemble semble menacé par l'ignorance, la bêtise ou la cupidité; le trouble que fait naître le spectacle (...) d'une société en prise à l'injustice et au désarroi nous émeut. Le sentiment d'un monde déboussolé pose une question prégnante: que nous est-il donc arrivé? Pour tenter d'apporter des éléments de réponse, pour affronter la complexité d'un monde qui effraie et rebute, il y a peu d'outils : la philosophie en est un, qui permet de mettre en perspective les concepts épars qui tissent notre compréhension de ce vaste sujet. Dans cette perspective, Pierre-Olivier Monteil a choisi la formule de l'abécédaire, qui sous des apparences fragmentaires, relie par une discrète architecture les tenants essentiels du bien commun. À travers 42 concepts fondamentaux qui peuvent constituer les contours de cet espace informel (d'Amitié à Violence, en passant par Planète, Tolérance ou Liberté...), ce petit traité de philosophie entreprend une visite rafraîchissante des lieux-dits essentiels de notre vie partagée. Auteur d'une oeuvre considérable, Paul Ricoeur reste méconnu en tant que penseur politique. Pour la première fois, cet ouvrage procède au remembrement des fragments dispersés d'un projet qui aura constitué sans aucun doute l'une des préoccupations constantes du philosophe. Il considère les enjeux du pouvoir dans une extension inédite : sa conquête et son exercice, le vivre-ensemble dans la Cité, mais aussi les conditions de l'agir du citoyen, gardien de la démocratie. Le parti pris de penser le politique dans les (...) termes d'un "paradoxe" témoigne d'un refus méthodique du systématisme, qui fait le lit des totalitarismes. En associant deux thèses adverses également fondées, Ricoeur invite à les concilier, non par un savoir, mais dans la pratique. Récusant toute position de surplomb, il réplique au "mal politique" par l'espérance, l'ouverture au possible. Par rapport à l'économie et à la culture, il réaffirme l'autonomie du politique, qu'il articule à une "éthique démocratique", en sorte que le souhaitable oriente le possible. Ricoeur a le souci d'exposer la réflexion à l'événement pour mieux en saisir la portée à l'aune d'une anthropologie philosophique. Dans son sillage, l'auteur confronte cette pensée politique à la situation contemporaine, pour une mutuelle mise à l'épreuve d'où surgit une critique en creux de la raison néolibérale et une contribution potentielle aux débats du moment. Loin cependant de s'y cantonner, la proposition de Ricoeur invite à discerner dans la "dette sans faute", qui résulte pour chacun du fait d'être né, les ressources d'un agir poétique capable de surmonter le désenchantement des modernes. L'imagination, en inversant l'endettement en gratitude, peut raviver le sens du vivre-ensemble dans une "pratique de la fraternité". (shrink)

Les commentateurs s’accordent pour constater une évolution dans la pensée politique de Ricœur conduisant d’un radicalisme à un réformisme. Par-delà ces variations, on se propose plutôt de mettre en évidence la continuité d’un projet. Non seulement la critique du capitalisme se poursuit jusqu’au bout, mais la perspective du socialisme semble très tôt tenue pour improbable. Dans les deux cas, la préoccupation centrale porte sur la nécessité de raviver les traditions et de faire émerger l’élan initial sous la doctrine “ossifiée ” (...) en les situant en tension critique entre elles pour qu’elles se corrigent mutuellement. This study undertakes a reading of Etienne de La Boétie’s Discours de la servitude volontaire, endeavoring to bring to light the way it convergences with and diverges from the political thought of Paul Ricœur, around the central concept of the will. On the basis of the twin notions of “denaturation” and of “pathology,” a course unfolds which aims at helping establish the people, in comparison with the institution of the State, through a political process revitalised by friendship. But the two (...) thinkers differ when it comes to the resources of the will. This is reflected in the notion of freedom, conceived as absolute in La Boetie, while Ricœur emphasizes its contingency, which leads him to thematize it in terms of capabilities. (shrink)

While honoring the career and the thought of Jean Gayon (1949-2018), this book showcases the continued relevance of Gayon’s interdisciplinary work and illustrates his central place in the community of historians and philosophers of the life sciences. Chapters in this book address Jean Gayon’s intellectual trajectory from historical epistemology (...) to the philosophy of biology, the nature and scope of his philosophical approach to the history of science, and his unique contributions to the history and epistemology of biological concepts and theories. After placing Canguilhem’s contributions within the larger history of historical epistemology in France, and clarifying his views regarding this expression, I re-evaluate the relation between concepts and experimental practices in Canguilhem’s philosophy of science. Drawing on his early writings on the relations between science and technology in the 1930s, on the Essai sur quelques problèmes (...) concernant le normal et le pathologique , and on La formation du concept de réflexe aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles , I argue that the formation and rectification of concepts in Canguilhem’s sense are intrinsically bound with the experimental, material, technical, and cultural contexts in which concepts are operationalized. In this article, I argue that distinguishing ‘evolutionary’ from ‘Darwinian’ medicine will help us assess the variety of roles that evolutionary explanations can play in a number of medical contexts. Because the boundaries of evolutionary and Darwinian medicine overlap to some extent, however, they are best described as distinct ‘research traditions’ rather than as competing paradigms. But while evolu- tionary medicine does not stand out as a new scientific field of its own, Darwinian medicine is united by a number of (...) distinctive theoretical and methodological claims. For example, evolutionary medicine and Darwinian medicine can be distinguished with respect to the styles of evolutionary explanations they employ. While the former primarily involves ‘forward looking’ explanations, the latter depends mostly on ‘backward looking’ explanations. A forward looking explanation tries to predict the effects of ongoing evolutionary processes on human health and disease in contem- porary environments (e.g., hospitals). In contrast, a backward looking explanation typically applies evolutionary principles from the vantage point of humans’ distant biological past in order to assess present states of health and disease. Both approaches, however, are concerned with the prevention and control of human diseases. In con- clusion, I raise some concerns about the claim that ‘nothing in medicine makes sense except in the light of evolution’. (shrink)

Frederick Griffith was an English bacteriologist at the Pathological Laboratory of the Ministry of Health in London who believed that progress in the epidemiology and control of infectious diseases would come only with more precise knowledge of the identity of the causative microorganisms. Over the years, Griffith developed and expanded a serological technique for identifying pathogenic microorganisms, which allowed the tracing of the sources of infectious disease outbreaks: slide agglutination. Yet Griffith is not remembered for his contributions to the biology (...) and epidemiology of infectious diseases so much as for discovering the phenomenon known as ‘transformation’. Griffith’s discovery, for many, was a pure case of serendipity whose biological relevance had also largely escaped him. In this paper, I argue that the key to understanding the significance of bacterial transformation – and the scientific legacy of Fred Griffith – rests not only on it initiating a cascade of events leading to molecular genetics but also on its implications for epidemiology based on the biology of host–parasite interactions. Looking at Griffith’s entire career, instead of focusing only on the transformation study, we can better appreciate the place of the latter within Griffith’s overall contributions. Presented in this way, Griffith’s experiment on bacterial transformation also ceases to appear as an anomaly, which in turn leads us to rethink some of the most prevalent historical conceptions about his work. In teasing out the diverse origins of our “modern, ecological understanding of epidemic disease” Greater than the parts: holism in biomedicine, 1920–1950, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1998), historians have downplayed the importance of parasitology in the development of a natural history perspective on disease. The present article reassesses the significance of parasitology for the “invention” of medical ecology in post-war France. Focussing on the works of microbiologist Charles Nicolle and on that of physician and zoologist Hervé Harant, I argue that (...) French “medical ecology” was not professionally insulated from some major trends in parasitology, especially in Tunis where disciplinary borders in the medical sciences collapsed. This argument supports the claim that ecological perspectives of disease developed in colonial context but I show that parasitologists such as Harant built on the works of medical geographers who had called attention to the dynamic and complex biological relations between health and environment in fashioning the field of medical ecology in the mid-1950s. As the network of scientists who contributed to the global emergence of “disease ecology” is widening, both medical geography and parasitology stand out as relevant sites of inquiries for a broader historical understanding of the multiple “ecological visions” in twentieth-century biomedical sciences. Gaining momentum during the last third of the twentieth century, the philosophy of biology is now a distinct field with its own debates, journals, audiences, and professional societies. This professionalization came along with the forging of an intellectual identity based on the existence of disciplinary frontiers that demarcated philosophy of biology from neighboring disciplines such as philosophy of medicine, history of biology, or general philosophy of science. Here, I argue that the identity of this emerging philosophy of biology also excluded (...) Continental traditions often called “biological philosophy” or “historical epistemology of the life sciences”. Going back to the 60s and 70s, I explore the emergence of the philosophy of biology at a time when its identity was still in flux and its analytic orientation debated. To do so, I focus primarily on the works of David Hull and Marjorie Grene, and I draw on their unpublished correspondence. Although Grene’s intellectual contribution to the philosophy of biology has been widely acknowledged, her coming from a different philosophical universe created tensions with the identity Hull and others sought to establish. Overall, this chapter raises a question about the historical conditions that make fields such as the philosophy of biology possible, and calls attention to the exclusions that permeated the philosophy of biology from its inception and what this involves in terms of the proper relation between philosophy and science, especially biology. The academic path of Jean Gayon (1949–2018) follows in the wake of the “French style” in epistemologyEpistemology, but he is also one of the first representatives of philosophy of biology in France. In the light of this double philosophical heritage, this chapter re-examines the relations between the works of Gayon, the tradition in which he first studied, and the one he later adopted, but not without reservations. Tracing his intellectual journey, this article explores why he naturally appears as a Canguilhemian, (...) a view against which he defends himself. Attending to the connexions that he established with the philosophers of biology will bring to light the growing tension that inhabits him, from the middle of the 1980s onwards, and which led him to identify some of the limits inherent to theHistorical epistemology matrix of historical epistemologyGayon, JeanOn historical epistemology, without disowning his first philosophical tradition. Finally, in an attempt to reconcile two approaches, I will underline the emergence in the thought of Jean Gayon of a third way seeking to overcome the opposition between a “unitarian” style that seeks to make a clear break with the history of scienceHistory of science and its philosophical past, and the “dualist” style which tends to stay above scientific debates, and which accepts a clear distinction between the work of science and the work of philosophy. Reuniting the history and the philosophy of the sciences, privileging the long durée and depths of history, where the problems of biology unfold, while also recognizing the value of analysing the conceptual puzzles which structure the contemporary life sciences, the oeuvre of Jean Gayon illustrates the complementary character of these disciplines. Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Paris 1–Panthéon-Sorbonne since 2000, former director of the Institute of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (IHPST) of the CNRS, Jean Gayon (1949–2018) died on April 28th 2018 following a long illness that he faced with determination and courage.

François Jacob’s The Logic of Life: A History of Heredity has shown an enduring relevance for the history and philosophy of biology. In this article, resisting the received view that regards this book merely as an application of Foucault’s archaeological method, I reconstruct a silent debate between François Jacob and Jacques Monod. More precisely, I argue that Jacob’s history of biology offers a riposte to Monod’s claims in Chance and Necessity. First, I show that the distinction between a “history of (...) ideas” and a “history of objects” captures two ways of looking at the history of science that characterize Monod’s and Jacob’s own approaches. Next, I present Monod’s search for a “theory of the natural selection of ideas.” Then I argue that the concept of “integron,” introduced by Jacob in his conclusion, covertly undermines Monod’s argument for the use of evolutionary models of cultural and scientific change. These contrasting perspectives shed new light on why the Nobel colaureates and former colleagues expressed little interest in each other’s books. More generally, the Monod-Jacob divide illustrates the use and rejection of biological models in writing the history of science and the importance of situating Jacob within his own milieu. (shrink)

L’obésité est aujourd’hui reconnue par de nombreuses associations médicales comme un état pathologique. Dans cet article, je m’intéresse d’abord à la construction des entités nosologiques avant d’aborder les étapes ayant conduit à la médicalisation de l’obésité au siècle dernier. J’examine ensuite les principales approches en philosophie de la médecine pour déterminer si elles offrent des arguments qui sont en faveur ou qui vont à l’encontre de la thèse selon laquelle l’obésité est une maladie. Je soutiens que l’approche naturaliste, plus sensible (...) aux données des sciences biomédicales, échoue à spécifier en quoi l’obésité serait une maladie et que si l’approche normativiste y parvient mieux, c’est au prix d’une permissivité dont on peut craindre les dérives. Néanmoins, cette dernière permet de mettre en évidence la part sociale et biologique des pathologies dans leur identification en tant que pathologies. Ma conclusion rejoindra celle de Hofmann : les raisons avancées pour soutenir que l’obésité constitue une maladie au sens propre sont principalement de nature pragmatique. (shrink)

La pensée de Benjamin Constant se distingue par son intemporalité. Ce libéral en tout, né à Lausanne en 1767, est l’un des théoriciens et des praticiens les plus profonds de la philosophie libérale. Il fut l’un des membres illustres du groupe de Coppet, autour de Madame de Staël, dévolu à l’étude et au développement intellectuel de la liberté sous tous ses aspects. Dans la concurrence des idées qui caractérise l’Occident, ses principes demeurent à bien des égards inégalés jusqu’à ce jour. (...) Il fait notamment figure de précurseur de l’école (nobelisée) des choix publics. D’où l’intérêt de s’y replonger à une époque d’incertitudes sur l’avenir des démocraties libérales, que l’étatisme et le collectivisme ont tendanciellement éloignées de leurs vertus. La primauté du droit sur l’arbitraire, le respect des libertés des individus face aux majorités électorales, la garantie de la propriété envers l’excès fiscal et réglementaire, le rôle des constitutions, les questions religieuses, les conceptions même de liberté, d’individualité et de perfectibilité au vingt-et-unième siècle trouvent des points de départ ou des réponses dans la réflexion constantienne. Pour Constant, l’État doit s’articuler autour d’une seule tâche : celle de préserver la liberté individuelle. Et celle-ci ne se divise pas à l’envi. La liberté de conscience et la liberté de pensée sont indissociables de la liberté économique, de la liberté éducative ou encore de la liberté d’opinion et d’expression. Benjamin Constant anticipe et analyse ainsi de nombreux défis auxquels sont confrontées les sociétés contemporaines. Ce volume, qui réunit les contributions thématiques de certains des meilleurs experts de Constant et du libéralisme, offre une perspective appliquée et actuelle sur la philosophie politique à l’origine de l’harmonie et de la prospérité de nos régions. This book analyzes emergency legislations formed in response to terrorism. In recognition that different countries, with different legal traditions, have different solutions, it adopts a comparative point of view. The countries profiled include America, France, Israel, Poland, Germany and United Kingdom. The goal is not to offer judgment on one response or the other. Rather, the contributors offer a comprehensive and thoughtful examination of the entire concept. In the process, they draw attention to the inadaptability of traditional legal and philosophical (...) categories in a new and changing political world. The contributors first criticize the idea of these legislations. They then go on to develop different models to respond to these crises. They build a general analytical framework by answering such questions as: What is an emergency legislation? What kinds of emergencies justify laws of this nature? Why is contemporary terrorism such a specific emergency justifying new laws? Using legal and philosophical reflections, this study looks at how we are changing society. Coverage also provides historical experiences of emergency legislations to further illustrate this point. In the end, readers will gain insight into the long-term consequences of these legislations and how they modify the very work of the rule of law. (shrink)
