Comment Spinoza peut-il être encore aujourd'hui notre "contemporain"? Les études ici rassemblées proposent plusieurs types de réponses à cette question au coeur des relations entre la philosophie et son histoire. C'est d'abord la persistance d'un dialogue entre les philosophes contemporains (Deleuze, Derrida, Milner, Negri...) et Spinoza. C'est la mise en évidence du soubassement classique de questions éthiques contemporaines (la nature du scepticisme, le bonheur, l'immortalité prothétique dans l'indéfinie différance de la mort). C'est surtout (telle est la thèse générale de l'ouvrage) (...) une vision de la politique selon l'extériorité, l'immanence et la loi quantitative du "compte". Quand les "valeurs" (derniers restes de la transcendance) sont source de violence, les comptes démocratiques sont source de paix. La lecture que propose Derrida de Genet, dans Glas, est un exemple particulièrement intéressant de la méthode déconstructive en matière d’interprétation des textes littéraires. Venant à peine plus de vingt ans après le Saint Genet, comédien et martyr de Sartre, le texte de Derrida ne pouvait manquer en effet d’entrer en rivalité avec celui du grand auteur encore vivant à l’époque. Et de fait, Derrida, non seulement ne manque aucune occasion, dans Glas, de souligner les insuffisances et les défauts qu’il (...) relève chez Sartre, mais se trouve en outre conduit, par la nécessité de cette opposition, à caractériser sa propre méthode aussi nettement que possible, jusqu’à souligner, voire accuser, les traits de son projet de lecture. De là, malgré la complication voulue (et parfois indémêlable) du texte, la grande clarté doctrinaire de Glas, et, pour peu qu’on ait la patience de le lire, son fréquent aspect de « manifeste » ou de « défense et illustration » de la déconstruction en littérature. Bien loin de contresigner le pacte d’illisibilité que nous proposerait Glas, je me propose donc, dans les pages qui suivent, d’exposer aussi clairement que possible, en elle-même et par différence d’avec celle de Sartre principalement, cette lecture derridienne de Genet : ses principes, ses résultats, son originalité, mais aussi, comme nous le verrons, certaines ressemblances parfois inattendues avec sa rivale, tenant sans doute (telle sera du moins mon hypothèse finale) à la difficulté même de définir au fond l’intérêt qu’une philosophie (en tant que telle) peut trouver à se confronter à une œuvre littéraire (en tant que telle)… . La collection « Dictionnaire...» a l'ambition de présenter, dans des ouvrages de 200 pages environ, l'essentiel des termes (le mot est volontairement vague) dans lesquels s'exprime chaque philosophe.

Cherchant sans cesse, à l'exemple des philosophes les plus classiques, la vérité par l'argumentation, Jacques Derrida n'a cependant jamais pu être enrôlé par quelque camp que ce soit, et a sans doute, à ce titre, suscité bien des incompréhensions, des déceptions, parfois des dépits (qu'ils soient amoureux ou non). Cette situation singulière est due en partie à l'essence musicale de son écriture et de sa philosophie. La "philosophie de l'écriture", que le présent ouvrage présente dans toute sa logique, son originalité (...) et sa portée, a toujours différé autant que possible ce moment de la saisie intuitive où la pensée se cristallise en positions. Bientôt quinze ans après sa mort, les jalousies et les malentendus allant s'apaisant, Derrida occupe peu à peu en France la place qu'il n'a jamais cessé d'occuper partout dans le monde : celle d'un philosophe original et brillant, qui a introduit dans l'histoire de la pensée un nouveau point de vue (l'écriture) qui permet de la redessiner et de la faire avancer. Il n'est désormais presque aucun domaine de la philosophie contemporaine (qu'il s'agisse du langage, du rapport à la littérature, de l'éthique, des théories du droit, de la responsabilité, de la démocratie, mais également de l'esthétique, de la psychanalyse, de l'anthropologie et des sciences humaines en général) qui ne se réclame de sa philosophie, ou ne lui soit redevable en quelque manière. Dans la proposition 39 de la partie 5 de l’Éthique, Spinoza déclare et démontre le parallélisme entre « l’éternité de l’âme » et les « aptitudes du corps ». L’article tente de donner sens dans un cadre spinoziste à cette étonnante proposition, en examinant diverses hypothèses interprétatives : complexité supérieure du corps humain?, salut de l’âme par la santé du corps?, maîtrise ascétique de soi?, plaisirs harmonieusement équilibrés? Chacune de ces hypothèses s’avère acceptable dans une certaine mesure, mais jamais totalement. (...) Semantic codes constitute the world, not in a mechanistic “cause-and-effect” sense but through another type of linkage. This article explores some of the semantic code, the “semantic DNA,” of mainstream neoclassical economic development policy thinking and writing and looks at what that mode of thinking incorporates into its discourse as “social.” The various forms of the “social” in economics discourse add up, from a sociologist’s viewpoint, to disappointingly little: they mainly consist of a miscellaneous set of noneconomic aspects that mainstream (...) economic thinking can use to blame for the policy-performance gap between what such thinking promises and what it often actually delivers. Perhaps the most readable and accessible of the great works of scientific imagination, The Origin of Species sold out on the day it was published in 1859. The publication of Darwin's On the Origin of Species in 1859 ignited a public storm he neither wanted nor enjoyed. Having offered his book as a contribution to science, Darwin discovered to his dismay that it was received as an affront by many scientists and as a sacrilege by clergy and Christian citizens. To answer the criticism that his theory was a theory only, and a wild one at that, he published two volumes in 1868 to demonstrate that evolution was (...) obvious to anyone who cared to look at a bull in a pasture or a dog on a hearth. In response to those who insisted that species were distinct since creation, Darwin pointed to breeders of pigs and pigeons. In reply to those who protested that human intervention is one thing and natural selection another, he argued, "If organic beings had not possessed an inherent tendency to vary, man could have done nothing." To counter those who scorned his descriptions of species in exotic places, he submitted local evidence of cabbages and cauliflower. Based on a wide array of sources, from ancient pictographs to Polish roosters, from skins and from skeletons, from scientific journals and breeding manuals, Darwin assembled a mass of proof--and a hypothesis about species reversion that risked his reputation anew. The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication is a two-volume compilation of his thorough and intensive research and the revolutionary conclusions that resulted. The first portion of his work is dedicated to a meticulous analysis of various aspects of plant and animal life, including an inventory of varieties and their physical and behavioral characteristics, investigation of the impact of a species' surrounding environment and the role that both natural and forced changes in this environment have had. Darwin then turns to a richly detailed discussion of the roles of inheritance and crossing in the development of species. A wealth of illustrations further support and enhance his findings. This fascinating, invaluable, and courageous undertaking eventually formed the foundation for our current understanding of evolution.
