Tysk, kulturkritisk reaktionær livsfilosof. Til hans pantheon af inspirationertæller særligt Goethe, Nietzsche og Bachofen. Som ung blev Klages kendt som psykologisk og grafologisk teoretiker og var centralt medlem af den litterære og kunstneriske kreds omkring digteren Stefan Georges i München. Han havde studeret kemi og fysik i Leipzig og tog i München en doktorgrad i kemi, men komaldrig til at arbejde som kemiker. En akademisk karriere inden for psykologi eller filosofi forfulgte han heller ikke. I 1915 flyttede han til (...) Schweiz i afsmag for militarismen, krigen og den moderne måde at være tysk på, og blev der resten af sine dage. Berygtet er Klages’ antisemitisme, som ikke var racebiologisk, men en åndskritisk antijudaisme. I manges øjne bragte den ham ideologisk i betænkelignærhed af nazismen, om end nazisternes chefideolog Alfred Rosenberg i 1938 tordnede imod Klages’ filosofi. Hovedværket fra 1929, Der Geist als Widersacher der Seele, udtrykker Klages’ grundtanke om sjælen og ånden som modsatrettede magter, hvorfra alle hans naturog kulturanalyser kan afledes. Hans indflydelse på en kulturkritiker som Walter Benjamin, der læses meget på danske universiteter, erunægtelig, men lidet erkendt herhjemme. (shrink)

English summary: In looking at the concept of "pathisch," meaning a receptive self, abandoning itself to an artefact or an image of life with an observing, experiencing, suffering attitude, this volume addresses change and uniformity in the theories of perception, the critique of logocentrism and that of the subject up to authors of post-structuralism, in particular Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes and Paul Virilio. It claims and concludes that over a long period of time, 'pathic aesthetics' have formed (...) one of the most influential counter- discourses to the modern concept of the subject. German description: Das Adjektiv 'pathisch' erwahnen altere Nachschlagewerke noch mit einem Hinweis auf Ludwig Klages. Es meint ein rezeptives Selbst, das ohne eigene Aktivitat schauend, erlebend, 'leidend' an ein Artefakt oder ein Bild der Lebenswelt hingegeben ist. Das 'wirkliche Erlebnis' gehort zu den transitiven Lebensvorgangen und setzt das Selbst von der Subjektstelle an diejenige des Objekts: Die Gemutsbewegung widerfahrt, das Ich fallt dem lebendigen Geschehen anheim. Von dieser vitalistischen Definition ausgehend, fragt das vorliegende Buch nach dem Wandel und der Konstanz in den Theorien der Wahrnehmung, in der Kritik des Logozentrismus und derjenigen des Subjekts bis zu den Autoren des Poststrukturalismus, hier vor allem Jacques Derrida und Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes und Paul Virilio. Die 'Pathische Asthetik' will damit an den Anfang einer 'Urgeschichte der Postmoderne' zuruck verwiesen. Sie geht aus von der Geistkritik der spaten Lebensphilosophie, denn der Terminus ist durch Ludwig Klages vorgegeben. Der Begriff beansprucht demnach, den Zeitraum eines Jahrhunderts abzudecken. Er historisiert den Theorierahmen des Poststrukturalismus und die Epoche der Postmoderne von deren Ende her - und entwickelt darin kritische Bezuge, die selten so gesehen wurden. Pathiker sind demnach nicht Treibende, sondern Getriebene: Gegenfiguren zu allen Tatheroen seit der Antike. Willenlos uberlassen sie sich dem Spiel ihrer Einfalle und trotzen darin den Machern und Handelnden, deren Dasein im Wollen aufzugehen scheint. Der Pathiker steht auf der Seite des Vitalen, Wesensnotwendigen, wahrend der Tatmensch eigenmachtig Akte vollbringt, mit denen er die Wirklichkeit und nach deren Auffassungsgabe die Welt fragmentiert und im Erkennen auf den Begriff bringt. Das ist ein radikaler Dualismus, dem jede Form der Vermittlung und Versohnung fremd bleibt. Uber lange Zeit ist darum die 'Pathische Asthetik' einer der wirkmachtigsten Gegendiskurse zum modernen Subjektverstandnis gewesen. (shrink)

This book provides a unique overview of and introduction to the work of the German psychologist and philosopher Ludwig Klages (1872-1956), an astonishing figure in the history of German ideas. Central to intellectual life in turn-of-the-century Munich, he went on to establish a reputation for himself as an original and provocative thinker. Nowadays he is often overlooked, partly because of the absence of an accessible and authoritative introduction to his thought; this volume offers just such a point of (...) entry. With an emphasis on applicability and utility, Paul Bishop reinvigorates the discourse surrounding Klages, providing a neutral and compact account of his intellectual development and his impact on psychology and philosophy. Part 1 offers an overview of Klages's life, visiting the major stations of his intellectual development. Part 2 examines in turn nine major conceptual 'tools' found in Klages's extensive writings, aiming to clarify Klages's terminology, to demystify his discourse, and to sift through Klages's credentials as a psychological thinker. Part 3 consists of extracts from Klages's writings, thematically oriented; these showcase the aphoristic and lyrical, as well as psychological and philosophical, qualities of Klages's writing, including his interest in aesthetics. Taken together, all three parts constitute a vitalist 'toolkit' -- to build a fuller, richer life. Drawing on previous studies of Klages that have only been available in German, Ludwig Klages and the Philosophy of Life provides a non-polemical account of Klages's life and work, with explanations and commentaries to guide the reader through extracts from his writings. The book accessibly explains the most important ideas and concepts found in Klages's work, including soul, spirit, character, expression, will, and consciousness, and it reveals Klages to be a serious figure whose thought remains relevant to many disciplines today. Ludwig Klages’ famous essay from 1913 is here translated into Danish for the first time. According to Klages, the planet-wide destruction of nature is a disastrous outcome of a runaway mad civilisation focused on progress. Famously, he finds the root of the madness to be an intricate entanglement of science, technology, capitalism and Christianity. Ultimately, these are all aspects of what he calls Spirit – an alienating and life-disruptive power that tears man away from its original being (...) interwoven with living nature. Its benign adversary, Soul, is characterised by caring for life. This elementary or cosmic love is linked to Soul’s way of recognizing reality through a dynamical flow of sensual pictures. On the other hand, Spirit’s drive to destroy and kill is related to its way of fixating knowledge of the world by means of concepts. Klages diagnoses modern ‘civilisation’ as an era of downfall of the Soul. The devastating events the following summer of 1914 may be seen as a consequence of the bad cultural standing. An anthropological ecology, spirit-dominated and with civilised man’s interest as its core value, is not enough to save nature. Only a deep ecology, where Soul dominates Spirit, can do so, moving the value focus away from man to Earth. (shrink)

Over the last few decades the arts and humanities have seen an increase in interest in questions surrounding gender. Not only did the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s see the growth of feminism as an academic discipline as well as a political movement, but in recent years there has been a huge expansion of research into Gender Studies, Queer Theory, and LGBT Studies. In essence, these disciplines all offer a critique of the system known as patriarchy, in which the ‘rule of (...) the father’ legitimates the exercise of political power and social control by men. In turn, this critique raises questions about alternatives to the patriarchal system, and it is in this context that some theorists and historians have been interested in the system known as ‘matriarchy’. In so doing, they are linking back to the work undertaken by such late nineteenth-century thinkers as the American anthropologist Lewis H. Morgan and, in particular, the Swiss legal historian Johann Jakob Bachofen. From 1841 to 1845 Bachofen served as Professor for Roman Law at the University of Basel, and it is with the cultural and intellectual life of this city that his work is most often connected. Now Bachofen’s outlook is well summarized by the title of his 1861 work, Mother Right: An Investigation of the Religious and Juridical Character of Matriarchy in the Ancient World. In it Bachofen proposed that humankind had undergone four phases of cultural evolution, which he described as hetaerism; matriarchy; the Dionysian; and the Apollonian. The contrast between the Dionysian and the Apollonian exercised an influence on another thinker connected with Basel, the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche ; and it was in the Nietzschean circles of the early twentieth century in German-speaking Europe that Bachofen’s work came to the fore. That this happened was due in no small measure to the figure who stands at the centre of Chiara Gianni Ardic’s new study, whose title translates into English as The Flight of the Gods: Myth, Matrarchy, and Fundamentalism in Ludwig Klages. For it was the circle around the charismatic thinker Ludwig Klages, arguably the most significant figure in a group of thinkers and writers known as the ‘Cosmic Circle’, that Bachofen’s ideas found a fruitful reception. The significance of Klages in the history of philosophy has frequently been overlooked, deliberately ignored, or even actively suppressed; so it is extremely welcome that Dr Ardic has undertaken to research so thoroughly the interest in matriarchy demonstrated by Klages and the members of the circle around him. Some of the first figures the Nazis conscripted in their rise to power were rhetoricians devoted to popularizing the German vocabulary of Leben (life). This fascinating study reexamines this movement through one of its most prominent exponents, Ludwig Klages, revealing the philosophical-cultural crises and political volatility of the Weimar era.

Der Beitrag rekonstruiert zwei Positionen aus getrennten politischen Kontexten der Zwischenkriegszeit des letzten Jahrhunderts, um die Begriffe »Rhythmus« und »Takt« auf ihren immanenten Geschichtsbegriff zu befragen. In den Rhythmusbegriff, wie ihn der Kreis um Ludwig Klages auffaßte, schreibt sich das Konzept der langen Dauer ein, während in den Arbeiten des sowjetischen Künstlers Alexander Michailowitsch Rodtschenko der Takt die Geschichte gleichsam auslöscht.

Can Ludwig Klages, the 'Lebensphilosoph', be brought into fruitful conjunction with Friedrich Schiller, 'der Dichter der Freiheit'? This discussion briefly outlines Klages's system of so-called 'biocentric' metaphysics, before turning to a consideration of his reception of Schiller, including an overview of earlier work in this area by one of Klages's followers, Hans Eggert Schröder. In the light of Klages's comments on Schiller in 'Grundlegung der Wissenschaft vom Ausdruck', a close reading of key passages in the (...) treatise 'Ueber Anmuth und Würde' is shown to reveal important insights in terms of the theory of 'expressiveness'. By investigating the possibility of a 'biocentric' approach to Schiller as a means to rediscovering his significance as an aesthetician, this paper hopes at the same time to have taken the first step on a longer path of constructing a 'biocentric' aesthetics.
